I’m fine with sour cream & mayo.

I’ve just never liked whipping cream/Cool Whip/etc. & wish I knew of a substitute for it.

The whipping cream in that recipe may be heavy whipping cream which is different than cool whip. Just a guess.

Yes. I got some of the best fried shrimp I've ever had at the Flora Bama restaurant on the bay side just last week. However, OP is a dumbass and has picked a losing battle.

Try a meringue,same texture but can be made flavorless or with your preferred flavor.
