Week 11

Breaking SEC press release:

The SEC regrettably would like to inform the fans that the annual roller coaster is currently unavailable and under construction. You will be notified when we are back up and running.

Bring on the Hate…

‘The last time a saw somebody as slippery as Missouri’s Hardy, I was kicking back some Ciroc with Diddy at one of his parties.’

‘Did you see where T-Mobile had their sponsorship pulled at halftime of the Aggie game? That explains the bad drops and lack of coverage in the first half.’

‘Texas, if all you are capable of is 20 yards, maybe you should stick to the fabric store instead of the football field.’

South Carolina @ Texas A&M
- The cocks during no nut November are hard to deal with. - AlaskaAg
- We suck. We’re going to lose today. - FootballFrenzy
- A&M is officially dead - HamzooReb

- final score will be 31-30. - TriStateAreaFootball (Note: this prediction was made at the beginning of the second half)
- Well SC, we'll always have that magical first half. - OleVaught14
- Elko like “ extend these nuts !” - Lawyered

Playoff Watch

This new section is not a prediction on who will be in the playoffs. It’s just at current standing based on merit.

As the ranks thin out, we may have to start introducing two loss teams before too long.

ACC
- Georgia Tech - 1 loss to NC State

Down goes Louisville and Virginia. The ACC is turning into a mess with Georgia Tech playing Georgia. Miami may sneak in with an open bid.

B10
- Ohio State - Undefeated
- Indiana - Undefeated
- Oregon - 1 loss to Indiana

B12
- BYU - 1 loss to Texas Tech
- Texas Tech - 1 loss to Arizona State

SEC
- Texas A&M - Undefeated, but they haven’t played the hardest competition outside of Notre Dame
- Georgia - The dawgs played 4 quarters and looked good doing it
- Ole Miss - 1 quarter away from being undefeated

Alabama & Texas each get another ‘loss and fall off pace.

Independent
- Notre Dame - Keep, winning and the media will fawn all over you.

Group of 5 - this will solve itself as the season plays out so I’m not going to detail this.

Here We Go…

Playoff Team

#3 Texas A&M (9-0, SEC 6-0, P4: 7-0, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: -)
Opponent: South Carolina (3-7) (P4), Line: -16.5 (-15.5)
Score: 31-30
Prior Week: P4 Road Win (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: P4 Win (Met Expectations)

I thought we had gotten our bad game out of our system. I was wrong.

K.C. Concepcion was the only guy that showed up in the first half, and he dropped an easy touchdown. As halftime came, I began to question if a comeback would occur, and I had the beginning thoughts of what I might include in an obituary might look like. I don’t know what Elko does at halftime, but keep doing it. In fact, you should do it before the first half, too!

I’ve never seen a game flip like that before (because I erased the UCLA game from my memory). Let’s get the bad out of the way: 2 missed field goals, dropped passes all over the field, -9 yards rushing at half, and 3 turnovers that should have been more.

Then the comeback happened: 28 unanswered points to win the game. Multiple 4th down conversions, running game wasn’t great due to the comeback effort, but was present. Great overall comeback.

You never want to see your team have a half like that. If they have another half like that moving forward, it will likely be fatal outside of the game this week.

#4 Alabama (8-2, SEC 6-1, P4: 7-2, Non-P4: 1-0, AP: -)
Opponent: #11 Oklahoma (8-2) (P4), Line: -6.5 (-8.5)
Score: 21-23
Prior Week: P4 Win (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: Top 15 Loss (Failed to Meet Expectations)

The only two statistics that didn’t fall Bama’s way were the turnover margin and score. If this game were to be played again, I’d have my money on Bama, but the Sooner’s won on this day despite the yards put up by both sides.

Despite being 8-2, Bama still has everything to play for. Your next bad game is likely to be your last, so let’s play good football moving forward.

#5 Georgia (9-1, SEC 7-1, P4: 7-1, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: -)
Opponent: #10 Texas (7-3) (P4), Line: -3.5 (+21.5)
Score: 35-10
Prior Week: P4 Road Win (Exceeded Expectations)
Weekly Status: Top 10 Win (Met Expectations)

If I were doing power rankings for this week, Georgia would easily be at the top this week. They looked dominant and dangerous for the playoffs. The score looked much worse than the game was. Texas was there up until the onside kick, but Georgia shut that door hard. Their SEC slate is done, so close out the season and let’s see where everything falls.

#7 Ole Miss (10-1, SEC 6-1, P4: 7-1, Non-P4: 3-0, AP: -1)
Opponent: Florida (3-7) (P4), Line: -11.5 (-1.5)
Score: 34-24
Prior Week: FCS Win (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: P4 Win (Met Expectations)

From an outsider’s perspective, this game looked harder than it should have been, but I realize this was a rivalry game. Florida fought hard, but the Rebels had a little more in the tank.

Kiffin kept the dream alive, but nobody knows what he will do next. He can’t get out of his own way by entertaining other jobs. While he could definitely be coaching in the playoffs, will he? All eyes are on Oxford to see what his next move is. For football fans, I hope he continues to coach his team into the playoffs.

Playoff Contender

#11 Texas (7-3, SEC 4-2, P4: 4-3, Non-P4: 3-0, AP: +9)
Opponent: @ #5 Georgia (9-1) (P4), Line: +3.5 (-21.5)
Score: 10-35
Prior Week: Bye Week
Weekly Status: Top 5 Road Loss (Failed to Meet Expectations)

Arch isn’t going to New York for the Heisman trophy, but he also isn’t the source of the offensive woes Texas is having. The talent around Arch is the bigger problem. The offensive line continues to struggle, the running backs can’t run the ball, and the receiving crew isn’t as talented as last year. Those issues are bigger than Arch. I believe Arch’s improvement is being hampered by the offensive line. He seems to be more surviving games instead of growing in them. It’s a tough place to be as it’s hard to get an offensive line to gel this late in the season. It kind of is what it is at this point.

Kirby seems to have Sark’s number. This is the third consecutive loss against Georgia in the last two years. The onside kick was a back breaker for Texas as Georgia was scoring while basically running out a lot of clock.

The Texas defense keeps them in games, but this game was not their best with 21 unanswered at the end of the game. The playoffs look like a stretch at this point, but you never know until all is said and done. This team is still talented, so let’s see how they finish out the year.

#12 Oklahoma (7-2, SEC 3-2, P4: 4-2, Non-P4: 3-0, AP: -6)
Opponent: @ #4 Alabama (8-2) (P4), Line: +6.5 (+8.5)
Score: 23-31
Prior Week: Bye Week
Weekly Status: Top 5 Road Win (Exceeded Expectations)

I’ll admit it. The Sooners are better than I thought, and I thought they were pretty good.

There is an old adage that defense wins championships. The only problem with that is the offense need to put up points. As amazing of a win as it was, I’m also concerned whether this is a winning recipe moving forward. My concern here is generating enough offense to get the necessary points to win. Every team wants to have a defense like Oklahoma has, but offense is required too. If you are relying on defense and special teams for points, this will likely bite you in the playoffs.

But let’s give credit to Oklahoma for the win at Bama. It was unorthodox in how they won, but they won. Let’s see how this team closes the season and could find themselves in the playoffs.

#16 Vanderbilt (8-2, SEC 4-2, P4: 5-2, Non-P4: 3-0, AP: -7)
Opponent: () (P4), Line: ()
Score: N/A
Prior Week: P4 Win (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: Bye Week

#22 Missouri (7-3, SEC 3-3, P4: 4-3, Non-P4: 3-0, AP: -7)
Opponent: Mississippi State (5-6) (P4), Line: -7.5 (+14.5)
Score: 49-27
Prior Week: Top 5 Loss (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: P4 Win (Met Expectations)

Missouri rebounded from their demoralizing loss to the Aggies, and put their foot on the accelerator to finish State.

Hardy destroyed with his 300 on the ground. Well done, sir! Because the ground game got going, this provided Zollers to improve his game. He didn’t put up great numbers, but he also didn’t need to. Mizzou back in the win column.

#25 Tennessee (6-3, SEC 3-3, P4: 4-3, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: -11)
Opponent: New Mexico State (3-7) (G5), Line: -41.5 (-8.5)
Score: 42-9
Prior Week: Bye Week
Weekly Status: G5 Win (Met Expectations)

Didn’t meet Vegas’ expectations, but I’m not going to worry about a G5 team.

Middle of the Pack

Florida (3-7, SEC 2-5, P4: 2-6, Non-P4: 1-1, AP: N/A)
Opponent: @ #7 Ole Miss (10-1) (P4), Line: +11.5 (+1.5)
Score: 24-34
Prior Week: Bad P4 Road Loss (Failed to Meet Expectations)
Weekly Status: P4 Road Loss (Met Expectations)

Florida put up quite the fight, but unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough against the rebels.

LSU (6-4, SEC 3-4, P4: 4-4, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: +6)
Opponent: Arkansas (2-8) (P4), Line: -4.5 (-3.5)
Score: 23-22
Prior Status: P4 Road Loss (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: P4 Win (Met Expectations)

LSU squeaked out the win against Arkansas. At this point, a win is a win.

Upset Artist

This new section is for teams that have fallen below the middle of the pack, but are dangerous and likely to get an upset before the season is over

Auburn (4-6, SEC 1-6, P4: 2-6, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: N/A)
Opponent: () (P4), Line: ()
Score: N/A
Prior Week: P4 Road Loss (Exceeded Expectations)
Weekly Status: Bye Week

Kentucky (4-5, SEC 2-5, P4: 2-5, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: N/A)
Opponent: Tennessee Tech (10-1) (FCS), Line: -22.5 (+9.5)
Score: 42-10
Prior Week: P4 Win (Exceeded Expectations)
Weekly Status: FCS Win (Met Expectations)

The Wildcats tore up their lesser competition for a decent win against an FCS opponent. When was the last time an SEC team faced an undefeated FCS team this late in the season?

Mississippi State (5-6, SEC 1-6, P4: 2-6, Non-P4: 3-0, AP: N/A)
Opponent: @ Missouri (7-3) (P4), Line: +7.5 (-14.5)
Score: 27-49
Prior Week: P4 Loss (Met Expectations)
Weekly Status: P4 Loss (Met Expectations)

I’ve been grinding with the dawgs all season, but this is a step back. I’ve liked what Lebby has been doing to stay in most games, but he didn’t do a good job of staying in this one.

Hall of Shame

At the end of the year, this will be the worst 3-4 teams. For now, it will be for public shaming.

Arkansas (2-8, SEC 0-6, P4: 0-7, Non-P4: 2-1, AP: N/A)
Opponent: @ LSU (6-4) (P4), Line: +4.5 (+3.5)
Score: 22-23
Prior Week: Bye Week
Weekly Status: P4 Road Loss (Met Expectations)

Come on Arkansas? You are keeping games competitive, but just can’t get out of the way for a win. I’ve lost count at how many games the Hogs could have won at this point.

South Carolina (3-7, SEC 1-7, P4: 2-7, Non-P4: 1-0, AP: N/A)
Opponent: @ #3 Texas A&M (10-0) (P4), Line: +16.5 (+15.5)
Score: 30-31
Prior Week: Bye Week
Weekly Status: P4 Road Loss (Failed to Meet Expectations)

I don’t believe in jinxes. Having said that, this team is jinxed. It’s the damnedest thing I’ve ever seen. A couple of weeks ago, you had Bama on the ropes, and this week, you were destroying A&M. The talent is there. We have all seen it, but this team just can’t consistently ball for some reason. The bottom falls out and all that effort is for not.

Dumping Shula was definitely a plus, but where the cocks excelled in the first half, they normalized back to the mean in the second half. It’s remarkable what happened at halftime. The team dominating became dominated. I don’t have any good explanations outside of halftime adjustments, but that can’t be the sole reason. It was like one team woke up and the other team fell asleep.

I’ll say this. I have yet to meet a fan from South Carolina that I didn’t like. These fans deserve better.

TBF, I also said things like, “let’s see what this team is made of.”

That Spurrier pic looks like a villain from the old Batman tv show.
