You need a good D at the very least, and thats not something your coach has experience with. His 2020 UCF was one of the worst ever seen, and the 2021 D was bad.

Well, besides maybe Bama, I don't see any particularly scary looking teams in the SEC next year.
And UGA will always be beatable with Stetson at QB. I don't sed your defense being nearly as dominant as last year. I definitely don't think we will need an elite defense to beat UGA, but Bama is a different story.
As far as Heupel's defense at UCF goes, I'd prefer to assess him at this level. UCF is ucf. Our defense showed flashes at time last year and they never quit. Third down conversion percentage will look much better imo.
And UGA will always be beatable with Stetson at QB. I don't sed your defense being nearly as dominant as last year. I definitely don't think we will need an elite defense to beat UGA, but Bama is a different story.

At this level, his D stunk. Thats what he brings to the table is stink D, and there is no reason to expect much improvement without all world A Taylor back and with a terrible 3rd down D back to be terrible again.

UT is one good head coach away. They have everything they need. Money, facilities, fan base, and tradition. Everything except a coach who can recruit and develop talent.
I walked the stadium this past Tuesday with one of the directors from the athletic development office.
The status quo is slowly being replaced at UT. Outsiders, hired guns if you will, are being brought in behind the scenes. Guys who must win to hang around. No more of the "he's a UT guy that can hang around because he is one of us.' A lot of the good ol' boy system died when Fulmer was shown the door last year.
Heupel will be good for 8-4 or 9-3 with the occasional surprise in a big game. He will get the program on solid ground, but it will take a top coach to get UT back over the hump.

The SEC and all of CFB was down BIG last year and i do not believe these Bama and UGA teams are as good as people think. 2020 Bama and 2019 LSU would have obliterated both imo.
Especially UGA. Not sold on them as a dominant team this year at all. Bama was essentially rebuilding last year so i expect them to be improved while i think UGA will fall off a bit after losing a lot of defensive pieces.
We saw what a healthy Bama offense did to that UGA D in the SECG. Bama and Tennessee were the only actual offenses that UGA played against and if Hooker wasn't off, Tennessee would have scored at least two more TDs than we did likely 3. We had wide open guys running everywhere the entire game.
So no, besides maybe Bama I don't think we need an elite D to beat anyone in this conference.
Simply spouting that you need an elite defense to win the SEC doesn't mean that you know anything. It is true in most years for sure.
LSU 2019 is the most immediate example with the 31st ranked total D. Auburn won it in 2010 without an elite defense. So did 2007 LSU. Those are some examples off the top of my head.
