Brachycephalic breeds tend to suffer from what is called Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Bulldogs get their name from the "Bull baiting" sport.
They were bred to "fight" bulls. They would latch onto the bulls nose and the first one to force one to the ground declared the winner. That is why they were bred with shorter noses and stronger jaws to have more weight and power "up front" when they grabbed onto a bull. Unlike today, they were a more aggressive breed in their origins.
