UAB is free to leave the system the second they give back the medical school they hijacked and stole from UA.
Imagine if Auburn (or any other school for that matter) had a medical school that was well established. The school decides to place THEIR medical school (Auburn University School of Medicine in this example) in Montgomery at AUM to take advantage of and serve the larger population base there. AUM decides they want the AU School of Medicine as their own and start slapping AUM logos on everything and branding it as AUM School of Medicine and pretending AU has no rights to THEIR school and AU School of Medicine grads are shunned from commencement and alumni events. That's essentially what happened at UAB. Not only did they steal what wasn't theirs to begin with, they have the gall to try to distance themselves from the UA system with their stolen goods (i.e. the University of Alabama's School of Medicine and School of Dentistry)

I actually do feel bad for the former and current players though. My brother grew up playing youth sports with UAB'S first ever quarterback when they finally became D1.
