Based on what I read from the book, the Tuohys didn't really know Saban outside of the recruiting cycle.
The Tuohy's are Saban's friends because of his agent. Can't remember his name, but he's HDN's and basically represents every Coach in the SEC.
Hugh Freeze was hired at Ole Miss by Orgeron, and we basically took all of their SEC worthy prospects (and then some).
Greg Hardy was Oher's high school teammate. Greg's dad played for Ole Miss in the 80's. Probably another thing pushing Mike Oxford's way.

It has nothing to do w/ Ole Miss, LSU, or any other school. It wouldn't have mattered one way or the other where he went to college. In fact, I don't even know anything of the details of his recruitment. In this case, all I know about is high school athletics in the Memphis-area. Hugh Freeze's involvement during his time at Briarcrest is important.

The agent is Jimmy Sexton.

Thanks.
Was right on the tip of my tongue.
Oher went to Westwood in 9th grade, but never played football.
He didn't play football until the 11th grade.
I remember playing Briarchrest my freshman year and just murdering them. The next year they beat us by 3 touchdowns.
They beat us the next year.
My senior year we finally beat them again.

Yeah, but I don't think that the Tuohys were that close with Saban because of their ties to Sexton. It seemed like they were casual acquaintances at most, and while the Sexton connection may have helped to break the ice, I doubt it did more than that.
I think Hugh Freeze was just using his players at Briarcrest as a means of getting a job with a major program. Oher and Hardy were two of his best prospects, but Oher was a year older. I'm not 100% positive, but I think he had worked out an arrangement with Fulmer at Tennessee and was trying to steer Oher there. The Tuohys hated Fulmer and did not want him to go there. I am sure they also had their own interest in placing Mike at Ole Miss as well. Ultimately, Freeze became the RC at Ole Miss, so he must have come to an agreement with Coach O as well as Fulmer.
I don't think Saban ever dealt with Freeze, but LSU was in a much better situation than either program at the time, so he didn't need to make those kinds of deals.

Leigh Ann Tuohy got Nick Saban to do the movie. She told him that if he didn't do it, they'd get someone short and ugly to play him. Sounds pretty friendly to me. I'll look for the article if you absolutely need me to.

Freeze sold himself to Orgeron. Orgeron had just gotten the Ole Miss job and Tuohy (or someone else) flew Freeze down to Miami (I believe) to Orgeron's hotel. Coach Freeze even missed some of his team's basketball games to get with Orgeron and try to position himself for a D1 job. I do agree that he used players such as Oher and Hardy to further his own career.

Elisha, where did you go to school?

I thought that Oher had played at Westwood High School if I'm not mistaken. Tuohy through his connections had directed many athletes to Briarcrest.
I'm sure that is completely correct, but it didn't seem that Oher had done anything in his high school basketball career that would merit him being one of the kids that a guy like Sean Tuohy would single out to place in a prep school.
Maybe this was something Michael Lewis intentionally left out in the book, but I don't think he would put his integrity on the line for a somewhat irrelevant detail in the story.

He wasn't a great basketball player, but he was so massive and athletic that he could manhandle most high school teams, especially the less-athletic teams. I believe the author didn't check on a lot of things regarding this book.

That's the thing. Briarcrest is notorious for recruiting football/basketball players, that is a fact. The Touhys recruit players to Briarcrest, that is a fact. The family are also very powerful Ole Miss boosters, fact. Oher was accepted at Briarcrest to play basketball, fact. The large private school division has produced rivals top 100 bball players three years in a row. Highly competitive with any highschool bball conference in the country. Football was an afterthought, but turned out to be his bread and butter. Oher is a good guy, but to say that his adoption/education had nothing to do with his athletic ability is false.

2002-2007 we can still agree to hate each others high schools. It's the way it has been and will always be.

I'm quite partial to hating your college too.
I almost went to Knoxville, but my Dad is Ole Miss alum and Knoxville was way too far away.
