what's the fist tournament you remember?
I remember listening to the '82 final with my dad when Ala beat Ken in Lexington on the car radio. I'm sure it was on tv but I think we were traveling. I was 11 I guess. It was a big deal. Didn't happen much.

The first I remember was the 1979 NCAAT. I'd watched some games in previous tournaments with friends, but that was the first one that I really cared about. A local TV station would show replays of the Arkansas game late at night, because I don't think college basketball was televised much at that time.

Always love hearing your stories from years past. I didn’t even know they took a break from having a tourney

The vast majority of Duke's successful history is Coach K. It's gonna be fun watching people come to that realization the next few years now that he's gone.
Coach K is responsible for:
5/5 NCAA Championships
13/17 Final Fours
18/23 Elite Eights
27/32 Sweet Sixteens
37/44 NCAA Tournament Appearances
Remember though that only 1 team per conference would make the NCAA tournament until 75.

And the tournament wasn’t seeded

It's crazy, our 06 natty team wouldn't have even made the NCAA tournament pre-1975 because LSU won the SEC and there was no conference tournament.

Yes.. a very different time.
What Wooden did at UCLA is amazing.. he won 10 out of 12.
But the tournament he was winning isn’t the tournament of today. It was much easier to win.

1979 was the first year the NCAA started seeding. Only 48 teams with top 16 getting a bye.

In 76 sEC Champ Alabama played ACC champ North Carolina in first round..
Then played undefeated Big 10 champ Indiana in 2nd round.
The final poll that year had Indiana #1 , NC # 5 and Bama # 6.
