That's what happens when an Ole Miss person makes a list of "Best in Starkville." Starkville easily rivals Oxford in food and things to do. No one can prove me wrong.

We are holding on to those 3 football nattys from yester year.
Along with anywhere from 5-7 other schools that claim them.
We could claim pre integration National Championships in 1940 (undefeated) & 1941 (won the SEC and beat Bama, that laughably claims it) but out of respect for those brave Germans that bombed Pearl Harbor, we choose not to. NEVER FORGET!!!

State has generally had the upper hand in basketball and baseball historically.
Football was relatively even during the first fifty years. Johnny Vaught is responsible for most of the differential in the series. From 1947-1973, OM’s record against State was 21-2-4. Now in 1971-72 Billy Kinard was the HC at OM but basically he was playing with Vaught’s players.
The change in the rivalry happened in 1970 when Vaught retired. Vaught wanted Bob Tyler to be his replacement. Tyler was a young up and coming HC who had won back-back state HS championship at Meridian High in 1966-67 before moving to OM as an assistant coach in 1968. Vaught recognized the brilliance of Tyler and thus wanted him to be his successor.
However that did not set well with the hierarchy and blue bloods at OM and the Kinard brothers out maneuvered Vaught, Bruiser was hired as the AD and he hired his brother Billy to be HC in 1971.
Tyler left to go to Alabama for one season and then came to State in 1972 as the OC before becoming the HC in 1973.
For the first time in 30 years State fans finally felt we were back on even footing with OM.
Tyler had a 3-3 record against OM (on the field) and while OM generally kept the upper hand through the 1980’s their complete dominance was over. Since 1990 it has been pretty even.
Had OM hired Bob Tyler in 1970, they would have continued to dominate the State-OM series probably for another 25 years. History would be different today. Thankfully for us, they did not and the football series is no longer one sided.
On the field (forget all the forfeits/vacated games which I think are ridiculous)
the series is OM 63, State 48 and 6 ties.

The premier program in Mississippi
Are you speaking of Delta State?

Delta State has a lot of good history.
They won three women’s basketball championships during the 1970’s.
Their baseball team under Boo Ferris (a MState grad who pitched for the Red Sox) and Bill Marchant, Mike Kinnison etc. has been strong for many decades.
Alas they are still a D2 team so no they are not the premier school in MS but a very good small university nonetheless.

North Alabama won national titles in 93,94, and 95. I guess they were the premier football program in that state during that time too.

There’s not really a premier program.
The two universities focus on separate fields academically, and, with the exception of baseball, both football programs just fill the role of being a [sometimes] respectable opponent on a schedule for Alabama.
Mississippi State can enjoy the relevancy off of the baseball title for a year or two, but most people outside of the state will forget about it.
The athletic programs at MSU and Ole Miss exist to feud with each other. You can make fun of us for it all you want, but at least we trade off wins and put on competitive rivalry games, unlike Tenn vs Bama and LSU vs Bama (2019 excluded).

Bama and AU had undefeated football programs and one a NC at same time. Plus, each had a better overall athletic program, so no.
Una won a d2 bb title in and around the same time as well, fwiw.
Plus, it was clearly tongue in cheek. Lighten up.

Yes but we and mostly you guys lately do not understand the Crabs in a bucket metaphor. We should be more like them and both not try to tear each other down, read tattle tale on each other. Have a gentlemen’s agreement, you know, like they do.
