Not Missouri, but if I recall correctly, it was legal to shoot a Mormon here until 1978.

Arkansas always has Missouri on their mind.
Stop denying your state's sordid past. Also, we play TOMORROW, poopswazi-face.

It was the fact that the missionaries were advocating for the Cherokee keeping their land.

It wasn't proseletyzing that got Missouri Executive Order 44 declared, but emerged from the legal ability to defend oneself against Mormon violence, murder and thievery. Hatred for Mormons who would take over towns, surrounding even judges' and sheriffs's homes and threaten them with violence unless they signed agreements, burning and driving out non-Mormons while stealing their land and property and stating that God intended for them to inherit the land owned by others created heavy anti-Mormon sentiment as they moved from county to county. The order gave authorization for the state militia to prevent further violence and prevent insurrection against the state, which Mormons were guilty of.
