I've played WR and DB and I can tell you that that is exactly what DBs are taught to do. You knock the ball down. Not bat it away, but knock it down.
ETA
However, it was a phenomenal play...just the wrong one.

Every bit as good of a catch as the INT in the other game, and the Brooks catch actually helped his team.
That said, Josh Vann was a hoss for you guys, too. Catches all night long.

The same morons who are defending him for intercepting the ball would be the same ones roasting him had OU ended up losing that game.
In the famous Boise State/OU Fiesta Bowl game.... before Boise had the hook and ladder/halfback pass TD/statue of Liberty two point for two point conversion series... an OU DB intercepted a pass and returned it uncontested for a touchdown. This gave OU a seven point lead with one minute left in the game. Since OU went on to lose in OT a lot of people were blaming that kid for not stepping out of bounds at the one. So they tried to make who would have been the hero of the game had they won...into the goat of the game since they lost.
Same thing would have happened to this kid had OU lost.
