Cowbells are pretty much only for football. Could you imagine 5-10K cowbells going off indoors and with echos? Let alone packing the Hump?

I can't say I know the full story, but we had a player transfer a few weeks ago and a Juco player who signed last year got hurt and was redshirted this year. We also had another big, skinny as a twig 7 footer, who was coming in and had some sort of eligibility issue with the NCAA this year. Add to that all the attrition we had last year and things are just blegh all around.
