Doug Dickey played at Florida, coached at Tennessee, coached at Florida, became AD at Tennessee.

It’s become the cool narrative to say that and all. But it’s not really true. Dooley won more championships and games than any other coach in UGA history (6 SEC/1 National) and he gave stability to the program for 25 years. He averaged an SEC title every 4 years during the Bryant era and is the third winningest coach in conference play history behind Bryant and Spurrier. He did all that back when Georgia was a rural, agricultural state and the bulk of the high school talent was in towns like Thomson, Albany, Perry, Moultrie, and Rome.

I get it - he went 7- 4 more than he probably should have, and he wasn’t great against Auburn. But he was money against Tech and Florida, and recruited and developed some of the best players in program and college football history. Give shaft this one - he’s got it right.
