Being as these are individual awards, it would have to depend on what bama's record was at that time. Records matter for individual awards.

Made me think of how talented that college year really was. Deion Sanders at FSU too.

And Troy Aikman at UCLA.

I was at the Penn State game in Birmingham and they had no answer and no chance. He was just too quick.

Look, I do not like Bama, but when you have a player like that you have to tip your hat. Derrick Thomas, Glen Dorsey, etc. were all defensive players screwed out of the Heisman because they play defense. Frankly, Clark this year was screwed out of the Butkus because his team is 6-6. Delpit should not have won the Thorpe award. York is not even considered for his award and he is the best FG kicker in CFB by a mile.

It is what it is.

I wasn't always a Pat's fan but what can you do but say Brady and Bill are goats.

Agreed. Saban as well. He was very good at LSU, but Bama got something out of him LSU never had, commitment. Saban always had his eye on the next job when he was at LSU. Saban at Bama is a perfect example of how a person can take a failure and turn it into a positive. As I said, it is what it is...

Over Barry Sanders? No

Barry had a great year. Derrick Thomas had the greatest season of any linebacker in the history of the game, and it will never be duplicated. It was possibly the greatest season by any player, at any position, in the history of the game. Looking at only the defensive side of the ball, it certainly is the greatest season at any position. Yes, Derrick Thomas should have won the Heisman.

Heisman had been a shite award since Woodson over Manning.

Goes way back to when Tim Brown ( ND ) won it over Gordie Lockbaum from Holy Cross...

During 1987, Brown caught 34 passes for 846 yards, returned 34 punts for 401 yards, rushed for 144 yards, gained 456 yards on 23 kickoff returns, and scored eight touchdowns.

During 1987 Gordie rushed 45 times for 235 yards and seven touchdowns. He has caught 34 passes for 552 yards and five touchdowns. He has made 15 tackles and two sacks, returned seven punts for 77 yards and seven kickoffs for 161 yards. He averages 170 all-purpose yards.

Reason #1 he was never considered: He played for Alabama.

I had the fortune (or misfortune) to watch both of them play at Kyle Field that year. Both players were dominant. We couldn’t tackle Sanders or block Thomas.

What an amazing memory to have been able to watch two greats.
