Shula had a lot of good DL and linebackers, and secondary players. Off the top of my head I remember Jarret Johnson, Kindal Moorehead, Mark Anderson, and Wallace Gilberry, Freddie Roach, Derrick Pope, and Demeco Ryans. The defense was always good in my opinion. Albeit, Bama never had the players that USC had then, but they had a talented bunch that was coached hard by Kines even when they were losing quite a bit.

Shula's recruiting was a mixed bag. He did well in-state, but the guys he would go after out of state just never seemed to pan out. They either didn't make the grades or had discipline issues or something else kept them off the field. I remember in one class, he signed like eight defensive lineman & only one ended up playing.

You can go look at the '08 class that was part Shula & part Saban & see that almost all of the players who committed to Saban contributed somehow while only one (Rolando McClain) that was committed to Shula ended up playing.

ETA: this probably actually reinforces your overall point tbh. With the portal and all.

Exactly. No need to wait years to get the guys that run your system. You go out with your shopping list and make the meal you want. The only thing that keeps you back is the fact you are a shitty cook and/or don't have the money so you have to go to Aldis or Dollar General.

Sorry for the grocery analogy.
