Tough for a WR to win it.
I love DeVonta Smith. He absolutely deserved the Heisman. But aside from his own talent, two other factors helped win him the Heisman:
1. Steve Sarkisian being able to scheme the ball into his hands, and
2. Jaylen Waddle getting hurt at the start of the Tennessee game. Smith was already having a good season, but Waddle had more yards, a much higher YPC (almost double Smitty's), as many TDs, and much more explosive plays. Waddle was well over 100 yards receiving in all 4 games he played. And Smitty never would have his punt return for a TD against Arkansas, because Waddle was the punt returner. It's rarely mentioned, and it doesn't take away from Smitty's very deserving season...but he likely never would have had enough opportunities to stand out if Waddle doesn't get hurt. Waddle very possibly would have had better numbers, based on the first 4 games.
