CBS didn't pay more, but they changed how they picked games for CBS instead and that allowed ESPN to make the SEC Network.
Basically for the SEC Network to work it needed top tier games to force cable providers into picking it up, but the way CBS picked the games nothing top tier could drop to ESPN.
When we joined CBS offered to let ESPN pick first instead of pay more, and in some cases that meant ESPN put marquee games on SEC Network. That made the network viable, which brought in hundreds of millions for the SEC over the years.
