I firmly believe that had JJ's TD pass vs LSU been for the win yesterday, we'd have a whole lot of LSU fans bitching about this rule too. It does sound like sour grapes after a loss, but it needs to mirror the NFL rule on where the ball is upon release, not where your frickin heel is.

Yep. Hell I was bitching about it even when we answered on the next drive. Its a bush league fricking play ... passing the ball beyond the line of scrimmage with linemen 5 yards downfield. Gimme a break.

Whether they change the rule or not, in the meantime, they should simply review both where the QB and the down linemen are.

To a neutral, there's something quite Mickey Mouse about these plays always being reviewed with the review official looking right down line and changing/confirming the call for the QB while obviously staring at linemen blocking downfield at the same time and saying "oh well" about that.

Also, I don't think O lineman should be able to block downfield at all on passing plays.

This is the only thing I agree with in your post.

I do need some clarification though. IF it is an option play, what are the rules regarding blocking past the los?

Currently, it doesn't matter what type play it is but simply that once the linemen go past three yards downfield you can't then throw a forward pass.

The reason defensive coordinators are so keen to have the rule actually called correctly is that they teach DBs watch the linemen as a "key" to know that the offense can no longer throw a pass from the play.
