I don't see them getting rid of the name rebels, the term is broad and a "rebel" is basically the same as an outlaw, doesn't follow the rules, society, is a badass, etc. OM would fight against that a lot harder I believe, they may have given in to the mascot issue so easily so they could preserve the name "rebels".

I'll do my best to fix that

If that does happen...it would be a crying shame. That's when I would probably officially be done.
So your a fan of "Ole Miss" and "Rebels" rather than the University of Mississippi and the athletics that are played by it's students? You really need to look in the mirror and get your priorities straight.

No I am a fan of everything that consist of the university....and those two names have a lot to do with that university....my alma mater. And my priorities are straight. I'm very proud to call my Alma Mater Ole Miss and I am very proud to be a Rebel.

So saying that you will quit being a fan if they are taken away, you are saying you are more of a fan of the nick name "Ole Miss" and "Rebels" than a fan of your alma mater. I don't want to see them gone any more than you do but damn, the university is where you can physically be, the buildings, the grove the classes, Vaught, Swayze not the nickname that we are known by. I will still be a fan of the University and not think twice about it.

You damn right I would not support the university if they were to keep giving up everything about the university. I'm sorry but the name to the university means a lot to a lot of people. I've had a lot patience with this university through 4 years....A LOT OF PATIENCE....and changing a name would finally be the last straw. It's become a big joke.

Last time I checked they still have classes, and they still give out diplomas. What about the university is changing again?

Dude it's just a name, if MSU changed their mascot to the cows, and took away our cowbells, then yea I'd be mad but I would still support the school. A true fan supports the school, it's students and fellow fans, coaches, friends and family that are connected with it. You don't support it based off a name or mascot, that's called being a sidewalk fan. It's like saying if your wife of 30 years gained 20 pounds, you would divorce her.

Just my 2cents as a current student. For me the University of Mississippi is where I attend class, where I will graduate from, and what I will always be a part of. However, Ole Miss to me is where I am every Saturday during the fall, the team I root hopelessly for in every sport, and the reason for one of the greatest road trips ever(Dallas '08).
They aren't the same to me, but they are inseparable.

Way to paraphrase a famous quote

Ok just a hypothetical question. If they do take away "Ole Miss" and "Rebels" (I hope they don't but just stay with me here) would you cheer any less on Saturdays in the fall for the University of Mississippi's team that they put on the field? I know I wouldn't and most people wouldn't either. The ones that would worry me a little bit.

ETA: To ht7: No I wouldn't, but my point was that I associate OM with athletics and the Univ. with school. I wouldn't be happy with it though. I had no stake in the Col. Reb debate because I'm not a life long fan, but losing OM would be a big deal to me.
It won't happen though so nothing to worry about.

FIFY I was at that game pulling for OM actually, I went to both cotton bowls. (heresy I know, but I got invited and I actually pull for OM except in the egg bowl).

There's a famous quote, I can't remember who said it and I can't find it, but it talked about the University is where you went to take classes and get a diploma, but Ole Miss is a State of mind and that one never graduates from Ole Miss

Well that was my point, but good catch I didn't realize it was so close.

sorry if my semi-liberal stance offends anyone. Was just trying to point out the use of code words.
I actually came here with positive thoughts for the new mascot after seeing the pictures from the Clarion Ledger.
