Personally it pisses me off more when someone writes down the state abbreviation as AZ instead of AR. Suprisingly that happens a lot out of state. I just want to smack them for being stupid.

Some find it derogatory, but I consider the tone\context in that it's used. You can call someone a MoFo in a friendly way or really mean that you think they f**k their mother. Its the context not the word

I think you guys frick your mothers in a very loving way

Is the term "Arky" offensive to you? I'd always just used it as an abbreviation for Arkansas, but one of your swine brethren told me it's a derogatory like calling some an Okie. What's the deal here?

It's like calling Cincinnati Cincy. I think people from Cincinnati probably do it. It doesn't bother me when people call Arkansas Arky, it's usually just an indication that they're from somewhere other than Arkansas ......perhaps Cincy.

During the depression, the term Arkie and Oakie were used to label the victims of the "dust bowl", i.e. "Grapes Of Wrath", when a lot of poor people from Arkansas, yet primarily Oklahoma, left their states in hopes of finding work in California and other places. (wmr touched on this) A lot of them were treated very inhumanely, and were despised, much like many people who come to the U.S. presently from other countries, for the same reasons, though they're not American. "Arkies" and "Oakies" were many times labeled as the dregs of society, though they were good people who had lost everything they owned. There were no government programs to help bail people out in those times. FEMA didn't exist.

Suppose the victims who came to Arkansas during Katrina were called "Louisies" and were welcomed as slave laborers. Would people resent it? Yes. Thing is, most of the people who lived through the tragedy of the dust bowl are no longer alive, though the slang survives. It's a matter of interpretation.

Haven't tried to post on there in a long time, but apparently they didn't care for my posts so I got the hammer. Weird because I really never flamed it that much at all. Hell 90% + of most of my posts on there were genuine

Quigley, for the most part, there's not many terms that we "swine" find offensive. I was just giving you an honest answer as to why some find "Arky" offensive. It doesn't bother me. Hell, I'm Porky!

Hogville has issues with posters from other schools in general whether they are good posters or not. Most of them never venture off of Arkansas websites so they don't ever interact with other schools. They immediately attack any posters from different school no matter what they are saying.
