HELL there was no contest to pick Colonel Reb (I'm not talking about the team name Rebels). The Colonel debuted in the yearbook in the late 40's and is based off the caricature of Blind Jim Ivy (athough this is debatable). Regardless, the mascot evolved. There's no reason now to have a damn contest either.

i agree mascots aren't something you pick in a contest.

i also disagree with the gay bullshite the student govs at LSU and ole miss did in giving the rivalry a fricking name and gay trophy. it makes it fake when you do bullshite like that.

Walking is a lot easier said than done. I grew up on Ole Miss, graduated from there, and hold this place very dear. This whole thing sucks!

trust me having the students vote on whether or not to have a mascot was a brilliant idea. Col. Reb is a sensative subject and replacing him had to be a majority favor, which is was. But say the university told everyone, we're fielding a mascot this year and its going to be this. It seems more like a dictatorship and a mascot is forced upon us. Everyone would have a problem with that in principle and then would all bitch about how it should've been a black bear, landshark, or blues player instead of what the university picked. This was the smartest way to keep blame off of the university and let the fans have what they want. Do you want an on the field mascot? Vote says yes. What would you like it to be? and the vote will tell us in August. FWIW Rebels was voted on very similar to this. Theres absolutly no way of pleasing everyone. We thought it would be to not field a mascot at, and the university got bitched at about that. So they asked us what we wanted and the majority said said field us a mascot. Cant please everyone, but this was the smartest way to go about it

I think out of the available choices, that would work the best for Ole Miss.

The name of Rebels as a team was sent to 22 sports writers in the South of which 17 chose this name. The name was actually suggested by a Judge in Vicksburg. As a whole, individual team mascots have always evolved into the culture of the respective schools. That's why they are different in some cases (i.e., Alabama and Tennessee) I just think it's a very generic and commercial way of selecting something that is supposed to be ingrained with a school. I guess I like the Bear most of all the choices as it can be justified with relevance to William Faulkner. Even so, it will take many years before even this doesn't sound contrived. I should also note that in 1936 when different names were being proposed there was a large number of students and alumni that didn't want any team name. Many thought the name "Ole Miss" itself was unique in its own right and it was not necessary to have an additional name. Which, is true as there is no other institution in the country that has a formal and informal name as equally recognizable. Having a contest is doing nothing but stirring up more internal division as evidenced by this thread.
So to answer your question, I would rather not have a mascot at all..at least this way. I will , however, go along with whatever, and still support my school.

i'd also rather not have a mascot. I mean who actually pays attention to that at games. But apparently more people do want a mascot and I couldnt have come up with anything better so Im satisfied with any of the those choices even though i think a lion is pretty ghey yet marketable while I have no idea what the hell hotty or toddy are going to look like. I guess we'll see in a few weeks

Exactly....although in 1926 the student leaders of Ole Miss and Mississippi A&M (as you were known then) got together and decided on a trophy for "The Battle For The Golden Egg" as the Egg Bowl was known then.

Omaha ..what is your mascot preference?

and.. do you think the band will ever play "From dixie With Love" again ? When Jones banned it he said he would consider having it reinstated at a later date. Or was all of that just BS? I loved that tune, and it was truly unique to Ole Miss.

Like I said, I'd rather not have one than go through all this shite. But since we're having to pick one, I am in favor of the Black Bear. Out of all the other suggestion this improves OM's image the most. It is also extremely marketable. The lion seems very forced and has a very weak link to the school. The horse is the boring safe option, but I wouldnt care. The lankshark has its good and bad points. I do like the jaws theme on 3rd down, but hate fans doing "fins up". I think it would solidify our potion on being a strong DL team every year and a lot of recruits are already saying they wanna be landsharks. That shite sells to 17 year olds. With Hotty and Toddy I cant show an opinion yet due to we have no idea what they'll be. But yea I would have no problem at all with a landshark, black bear, horse, or lion as long as its a live animal. The only mascot that I wouldnt absolutly hate if it were a costume would be a black bear, but would be extremely down because a live black bear or lion would be badass

I think FDWL will be back, but no for awhile. Not until every student that could've ever said TSSRA is long gone. So 5 years from now, yes I think its a possiblity

I think everyone in V-H should wear a Col. Reb stache and gotee and the hat. This goes for women and children. If State can bring in their cowbells, then OM should do this.....hell it's only for what? 8 games? Can you imagine the ESPN or CBS cameras panning the crowd?

thats the biggest problem, the trophy looks like you got it from Martins trophy shop and it would've been a lot better if they perminantly set the game for halloween weekend and named it something that wasnt queer
