I'd be more concerned about the hole in recruiting

What was Long supposed to do? Its middle of April, any "big" coach that left their school right now would be made into Petrino(Coming to Ark from Falcs) PR wise. Long pretty much had to either promote from with-in or look at McGee or J.L. Smith(Know the program, players, ect) for a 1 and done type deal. With Smith retiring at the end of the year this is a perfect scenario for him.

Come in to a top 10 team to coach for 1 year and retire at a major university.

It will negatively impact recruiting but there wasn't anyway to avoid it with the options currently available.

Uhh, yeah, there was. You take off this ridiculous stipulation that a new coach would have to keep the current staff in place.

There's no guarantee that we'll have a great season in 2012 just because the staff is in place. Our advantage was Bobby Petrino. Maybe we'll get lucky and pull out a 10 or 11 win season. Who knows.

But that one 10 win season just cost you 2 recruiting classes. 2013 is, literally, going to be the worst class we've ever signed. It will be atrociously bad. 2014 will likely only be slightly better.

Call me crazy, but I would have been okay with just getting this whole mess over with. Pull off the band aid. Take off the stipulation that a new coach would have to retain the staff.

Sure, we'd likely have some issues. Things wouldn't have been as smooth. But hey, at least we'd have seasoned players on the back ends of their careers, hungry, and trying to salvage their legacy. So MAYBE a new coach...a pro style coach, I'm assuming, could put together a surprising season and surprise everyone. Maybe win 7 or 8 games?

Is 7 wins, a DECENT 2013 recruiting class, and a good 2014 recruiting class better than a 10 or 11 win season and 2 of our worst classes ever? Because with the way this is shaping up, I fully expect we're going to have a couple of 4 and 5 win seasons in the next 5 years.

what a terrible hire. At least promoting within they could have had familiarity. This is an awful hire.

I want to win now, and give our team the best possible chance to win right now. It's not often you get as talented group of upperclassmen offensive players as we do now with Wilson, Davis, Hamilton, Gragg, and Johnson; throw in the fact we are deeper than usual on the D-line and will have a decent defense, and one should realize it would be crazy not to maximize this season's potential even if it means a blow to recruiting. We can worry about our 2014 team another year.

Interim?

it's a 10 month contract but he is not an interim HC. He is THE HC. I'm assuming if he does a half decent job he will be signed to a long term extension.

John L Smith has been on the staff the last few years as our special teams coordinator. It is essentially a hire from within, although not technically because he left for the Weber State head coaching job after this last season.

Well damn. Interim? Guy leaves his brand new job at his alma mater for an interim job?

Not hugely surprising. I suspect being HC at weber state does not pay 850K for 10 months work. John L is old enough to be looking directly at retirement. This just might be the nice nest egg to close the deal.

I'm aware but it's still not the same. Guy was a special teams coordinator not even an OC or DC.

Smith has 18 years of head coaching experience, and we want Haynes and Paul Petrino to keep their full focus on being DC and OC.

and had very mediocre success. Why not give a position coach or at least an OC or DC a chance. It makes very little sense to name a guy HC who has no control and was nothing more than a special teams coordinator HC.

Another craptacular hire by Long who is Destroying arkansas athletics one sport at a time.

Track? Check
Basketball? Check
Football? Check and check

What people see in this lazy mf'er is beyond me. But hey we have our integrity right?

JL Smith? Awesome. The man who untaught Tejada how to kick. The special teams coach who consistently let the other team win those 'one play wars for giant chunks of land.'.

What a Frankin joke Long has made of our program.

There you have it folks from one of your own.

I don't think JL Smith is that great. He has been at a bunch of schools and been mediocre at best.

I would rather have a guy who's been around the block a few times rather than a first year head coach on the controls when Bama and LSU come to town.
