There are a lot of variable at play here.
ESPN is usually a 720p broadcast on traditional cable and satellite broadcasts.
Most people use streaming now, like YouTube TV which also might encode it into a more efficient scheme such as h264 so they can use less bandwidth and still keep it at 720p.
A lot of streaming devices will upscale to your TV native resolution so it looks a little smoother. Doesn't really help with true picture quality.
ESPN 4k broadcast like Fox is usually a 1080p HDR feed that is upscaled to 4k. If you have the right equipment 1080p HDR can be very good.
However once again streaming services like YouTube will compress it heavily to reduce data demands.
Your local antenna will get an uncompressed 720p or 1080i feed which can look very nice because it doesn't suffer from the compression artifacts

I have a high end Samsung tv and the 4k feed is light years ahead of standard.

How much more clearly do you want to see Carson Beck's face?
