I'm thinking both of those billboards are probably in Baton Rogue. And even if they aren't, LSU is the only football program that people care about in Louisiana. It's not an overt attempt to gain recognition outside of your normal "home turf".
Mighty Yat is an idiot. These billboards are necessary in states with more than one SEC program. LSU doesn't have to worry about it, neither does Arky. They are far enough away from other major programs that it's not worth it. For MS, AL, TN, SC, GA, FL it's more important. If it helps recruiting/fan support/donations in a given area of your state, go for it. At least in not ridiculous and ghey looking. It's not a bad billboard. Yat sounds like a pompous arse to me.

Which explains why the LSU has had billboards/advertisements in the following places or things:
- Continental's In Flight Magazine
- New York City
- Chicago
- Dallas
- Atlanta
- Houston

But it still isn't.
Which is why I took it down. Unless you can come up with a similiar reason for the first billboard; your original question was answered.

Auburn's home turf can absolutely qualify as the state of Alabama, by the way.
Here's my point: When you see a billboard for a University - specifically when you see one promoting sports programs - it's usually in that University's home town, or proximate area. This billboard is in Mobile.
If it were in Opelika, Auburn, or anywhere else in Lee County, no one would have mentioned it. It's in Mobile - which is why some people see it as another desperate move to garner attention.
The "Choose Auburn" is what makes it funny to me. 100% overt recruiting ploy.

I'm willing to bet those advertisements and billboards didn't have pictures of football helmets with the slogan "Choose LSU".

Nice.
I get all of that. We don't have to compete with any other school in-state, but we are in just as much of a battle with the Gumps as they are when in comes to recruiting. The billboard just adds to all the nonsense AU is doing lately rather than just trying to sell the quality of the program and the school in general.

Tons of schools tie athletics in with normal student recruitment. LSU does it EVERY year in whatever city they are playing the bowl game in. Wouldn't surprise me if they had a billboard in Omaha
I also remember one in Indianapolis for the Final Four.

I dunno, maybe because High School students in Mobile might be interested in going to the school??

The first one wasn't put up by LSU. Did AU actually put that up or was it boosters/alumni??

I would say this billboard is doing just that. Selling the tradition of Auburn and its history...

Who cares what PART of the state it's in. Put in in Tuscaloosa if they want. The point is to get aggressive with recruiting, advertising, donating, etc. Billboards get attention (when they are done well) and this is an attempt to get attention. I don't begrudge state for posting the billboard after the 07 eggbowl. It gave them something to crow about and a year of attitude saved up for 08's 45-0 pounding. If Auburn wants to tempt fate in the same manner, who cares, at least they're trying.

How the hell should I know? I didn't even know that billboard existed until superman posted a picture of it. If I were to guess; I'd assume boosters, but that is pure speculation.

Not sure who paid for it to be put up, but the Auburn logo had to have been approved by the University in order for it to be used.

Something similar, yes to the effect of:
"Champions on and off the Field" if I remember the billboard correctly.

Most likely the University recruiting department, not athletics.

Tricky, tricky. That's promoting the school AS WELL as the athletic department. Very tactful by LSU's marketing dept.

That sounds more like an advertisement for the entire University and its academic programs.
"Fearless and True" with the AU football helmet, and "Choose Auburn" is a recruiting ploy - it has nothing to do with the University itself, or its academics.

Which is what Auburn did...
- Words for their Alma Mater
- Football helmet
- The words choose Auburn

No.
"Fearless and True" came from their unofficial fight song - which is used during sporting events. Nothing to do with the alma mater.
War...Eagle, fly down the field, Ever to conquer, never to yield.
War...Eagle fearless and true. Fight on, you orange and blue.
Go! Go! Go!
On to vic'try, strike up the band,
Give 'em hell, give 'em hell.
Stand up and yell, Hey! War...Eagle, win for Auburn,
Power of Dixie Land!
