it's not so much as giving the students the day off as it is probably giving the university the ability to lock all the doors to buildings on campus they don't want traffic in
Excellent point.

attendance is optional
So are you going to give the students that did come optional attendance for the next class meeting when you have to go over the material the normal people missed?

That is bullshite........they have to fill time on that show so they're gonna find anything possible to bitch about since ratings would suck if they all agreed on things
It makes sense to cancel classes for numerous reasons one being, let's face it, nobody's gonna go to class anyways
ETA: btw they're talkin about it on PTI rite now

You don't go over. As a student it would be your responsibility to read over what you missed. No different than any other time you miss class. You just aren't being counted absent for that day.
As a college student, you are an adult and can figure out what you missed.

You truly feel that way?

I'm not saying I would be in class. Hell no, I'd be out partying. But there are some kids that would actually go to class. I mean, believe it or not, there are some kids that attend a college that don't care about football. So to make it fair to both sides. Just keep classes open and make it optional that one day.
I mean, how many times have you just decided to skip class because you didn't feel like it? It would be no different than that really.

MSU's purpose is to be an institution of higher learning, not to be a fun place to hang out and watch football. Class scheduling should have been left to individual professors to decide. If they want to have classes and/or count people absent it should have been their decision not something handed down from on high.

But with people on campus tailgating and shite, its too big of a distraction for the people in classes, then all those tailgaters are going to be going into building drunk and rowdy to piss and disturb classes. It's just not worth the hassle.

Georgia Tech doesn't cancel class on Thursday gamedays (trust me, we had a bunch).
Some of the cooler professors might let you off though.
Remember, academics first (2nd), football second (1st).

Okay....is there going to be a day where these classes are made up? If so, then okay, consider this your Fall Break or whatever. No biggie.

This.
Did you guys who think class should be canceled also tell your employees to take the day off and/or not go into work today as well?

ESPN is the reason for Thursday night football, yet they have a problem with colleges doing what is necessary to make it happen.
ESPN has mastered the art of hypocrisy.

What an incredibly illogical point. Congratulations Robert.

Or, is this not a common thing at schools?
Dunno. Arkansas has never had a Thursday night game on campus.
I can see why a school would shut down though. All the parking lots on campus have to be vacated by midnight on Fridays for home games for football parking and tailgating. So yes, I can see why classses should be canceled.

its not as simple as making class optional. The logistics of trying to run class with parking and tailgating for a game would make it a pretty damn disruptive day. I also like the point of how espn is the cause of this so them bitching about it is funny as frick.
ryan should get himself suspended again for being a racist

My bad, I just looked at the symbol next to your name, how silly of me...Of course Arkansas isn't a much better institution but whatever works for you.
Also I never said you weren't getting paid wtf does that have to do with anything?
