My dad has an old acoustic I'm thinking about getting and restoring. Not sure what brand it is though, his grandparents got it for him when he was 10 or so. Figure it would at least be something good to learn on.

I played the John Mayer strat at a Guitar Center in Birmingham and it was amazing.

Yea dude, if I had any advice to give you it would be to pace yourself as far as spending money goes. I've spent WAY too much on gear over the years and I wish I would have just played on something simple so now I could go all out and buy what I really want.

Yeah dude they are freaking sexy. I think they are probably the best blues pickups on the market IMO..

Just get the neck checked out before you invest too much into it. I bought a $135 squier fat strat and put some fine pickups in it and Grover tuners. And it was a piece of shite.
Lesson learned. You get what you pay for.

I think the guitar is still in pretty good shape if it still looks the same from the last time I saw it. I know it needs new strings and a fresh coat of paint.

Vintage look is nice though, FWIW.

Do change the strings but DON'T paint it. Let that wood shine. That's the most beautiful thing about an old acoustic guitar. All the character and the years engrained into the body of the guitar make it the quality instrument that it is.

And as far as the strings go, get these:
Never rust

Thanks for the tips. Oh yeah and if I ever get decent I'd like to get a Les Paul one day.

Heavy as hell but a very fine instrument.

Yes, indeed. Another thing too... don't start buying guitars until you REALLY know your preference. I've owned Epiphone & Gibson Les Paul's, Ibanez, ESP.. but nothing can pull me away from that sweet Stratocaster sound.

Amazing strings
Tried out some of the Martin Clapton strings this last time I changed. Enjoy them but believe I will be going back to the elixers once I get my new acoustic.
