If it weren't such a tourist trap, I think Savannah would potentially be a cool alternative. Good drinking culture there, cool downtown, important to the state, etc.
All that said, it'd be a pain in the arse too because Savannah is big enough as it is. Not to mention I know you can find yourself on the wrong side of Savannah in a hurry.
