Not tipping = bullshite.

The tip should reflect the service. Period.

Yes, it should. But there's almost no possible scenario in which you shouldn't tip anything.

Poor service still gets a 5%-10% tip. Excellent service gets a 20%. Average to good service should get 15%.

Tipping is to be viewed as an expected part of going out for a nice meal.

If you can't afford to tip, or don't want to, then you can't afford to go to a sit-down restaurant.

Go to McDonald's.

Because otherwise, you are stealing. That is, not paying for services you agreed to pay for.

When I waited tables, I had to pay out 2% of the tab of the person who I waited on. This "tip out" was money I owed to the bus boy and the hostess at the end of the night.

My percentage "tip out" was based on my total sales.

When some a-hole didn't tip, I actually had to PAY for the priviledge of waiting on them.

You don't tip, don't go back.

I'll leave the consequences to your imagination.

I have, on one occasion, experienced service so bad that I tipped $0. In fact, I think I rounded up to the nearrest whole dollar so that the server knew I hadn't "forgotten".

If you are working in the service industry and getting $0 for tips, something is wrong. If it is not the server's fault, the server needs to get the manager involved and eliminate the problem. If anyone is repeatedly causing you to get "stiffed", you are a fool for "tipping out" for them.

The patron has not "agreed" to tip and is under no OBLIGATION to tip bad service. It is our preferred way of handling sub-par food or service.

Another way would be to call the manager and complain, again, tipping is not an obligation.

** Of course there are people who "Stiff" repeatedly, regardless of service. They are cheap bastards who feel it is fine to "use" others for personal gain.

ETA: you might have guessed that I have never waited tables.

I disagree with one point.

The second you walk in the door of a sit down restaurant with waitstaff, you have agreed to tip. Its not "extra" or a "bonus". Its part of the employee's salary. The range of tip is what the customer is allowed to decide.

Just because you can walk out without doing it and bear no consequences doesn't mean you aren't a shitty customer and shitty human being.

When I waited (a lifetime ago) I generally KNEW when I hadn't provided good service overall to the customer, and so it wasn't surprising for me when I did get a small tip. shite happens. We're human. And sometimes the kitchen fricks up.

I'm talking about the trash who go into a restaurant, recieve good service, everything they ordered promptly, refilled drinks, everything fine, and then walk out without leaving a tip. I remember those people to this day. I remember the preacher who was a total dick, and I remember the next time he came in he got spit in his diet Coke. I was 18 and wouldn't do that now, though. He didn't tip either time, FWIW. I still remember two women who did the same thing. I still remember the big mullett-wearing family who ran me ragged and stiffed me on a $70.00 bill.

The biggest problem is people who haven't been taught the proper way to tip, or that it is standard.

The worst customers overall were those people who came in from the sticks, thought a night at a chain restaurant was their big night on the town, and apparently hadn't heard of tipping.

When you hear people who have waited tables harp on tipping, its because you'd be shocked at the number of people who simply don't understand the concept or who have no problem ignoring it.

Its one of those little rules of civilization that everybody should know and follow.

I don't tip at Starbucks, or anyplace where they make you a burrito or anything like that. I don't feel its necessary.

I do give the Sonic kids a quarter or 50 cents, because hell, at least they're working instead of selling drugs or stealing stereos.

Understood. And like I said, only once was the tip a few cents.

You raise good points. I shall reconsider.

A waiter who's high, won't write down your order, forgets to put your order in to the kitchen, acts like a smart arse when you ask where your food is 45 minutes later, and then only brings half of the order doesn't get a tip from me. EDIT: The half he brought wasn't even what we'd ordered either.

Of course the only exception would be if the waitress is the mother of a 4/5 star recruit. Then the standard tip is $1000 cash with a RTR!

I once left a $.25 tip, but it was the absolute worst service I have ever had.

It happened in Mississippi. Seems like Clinton. There's a mall there, or on the western side of Jackson, with a Ruby Tuesday.

I was a business traveler with my boss and that place was disgusting. We were running late, saw something we recognized, parked and went in. It wasn't busy at all. Every employee sauntered around, leaned around talking, and I sat and watched my entree sit in the window for at least 10 minutes, and I am not exaggerrating.

When my bruque "waitress", i.e. the angry fat bitch who was supposed to be waiting on us, brought our food finally, everything was dry, cold and crusted over.

Considering there was garbage in the floor and nobody cared, I didn't bother calling for a manager.

We paid, left and went to Subway.

I highly doubt that Michael Oher recieved 0 service, as he was able to rack up a 95 dollar tab.

You've earned a lot of points in this thread.
You're invited to my tailgate for the Arkansas game, even though you're an old dude.

Well admittedly, I had a greasy little 90s Kurt Cobain wannabe haircut when I waited tables, back in 1995-96, which then transitioned to The Clooney (caesar cut) when that briefly became popular in 1996.

Strictly military buzz cut now.

Dude, I've been all over the Jackson area. Yeah it was awful. On the way out, I noticed that all the stores were selling was FUBU and payday loans.

I bought a bunch of DVDs at a flea market in Pearl once. Bored business travelers need to get into flea markets and pawn shops. I find the most interesting shite at those places. I once found a whole set of vintage German WWII medals on a felt backing and gave $35 for it in some podunk town in West Virginia.
