He might do a good job... knows SEC recruiting, lot of maturity, solid defense mind now... as transition coach he could be at least serviceable.

When you are struggling to sign 4-5 star recruits, you can still put a good team on the field with immature 3-stars recruits that are then allowed to age into 5th year redshirt seniors.

A 5-star is by definition simply “a player that can help a team immediately.” The rating does not predict how much he will develop going forward. He could be maxed out coming out of high school, especially in the lines, hence a lot of red shirts in the trenches.

One of Coach Saban’s strength is correctly evaluating a recruits potential for development regardless of number of stars. The services know this and tend to bump up Saban’s recruits because they respect his eye.

Missouri, Arkansas, State seem to be following this strategy of developing 5 year players. Don’t underestimate a coach like Steele.
