20 years ago, yeah. Today not so much.

In the 90's/00's it was a wash, with maybe a UT lead. Today, I think you have to go with AU.

UT just isn't attractive. They are sort of like Nebraska in a way---they have big name recognition and a good brand but shitty recruiting grounds. Just like it is hard to convince kids to go to bum frick Lincoln, NE when they can just go to OU, Texas, or TCU, it's hard to convince kids in the south to go to UT when they can just go to UGA, Bammer, UF and AU. The UT program relies on out of state recruits and it's very hard to pull Alabama kids from bammer, Georgia kids from UGA and AU, Louisiana kids from LSU, and Florida kids from UF and FSU (and now Miami). That's some tough sleddin'. Tennessee doesn't have 5 stars growing on trees 2 miles from campus like an LSU does.

However, Butch Jones has shown that he can recruit good talent. Since 2013, he has had UT at #13 average in recruiting. Not as good as Bama (no one is), but pretty close to UGA, AU, and UF (Florida was #11 over that time span, for instance).

I think the right coach can win at UT, but it's harder to do there than perhaps other "big 6" schools (in my mind, UT has dropped out of the "big 6" and are probably closer to like 8th or 9th today).

Relating Stallings success or lack of at A&M is a joke, he was coach there during the height of the Vietnam war protests when EVERYONE knows how entrenched the military is & was on A&M's campus.

Stallings actually out recruited Darrell Royal a few times and had more scholarship players.

Stallings and Royal had it out at the Surrey Inn restaurant in Caldwell (just west of BCS) about 1970 over Mr. Gene's dirty recruiting methods.

They wouldn't have been sent to the Army because joining the aggy corps was a way to dodge the draft.

Top tier:
Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Tenn(Big six)- NFL is the only real upgrade

Second tier:
Aggies, Arkansas - Would need lucrative tier one, but usually not leaving unless fired.

Third tier:
South Carolina, Mississippi, Miss State - Good jobs, could be a final destination for the right coach

Fourth Tier:
Kentucky, Vandy, Missouri - All their good coaches will leave eventually.

Trying to be completely unbiased, but if I was a coach and I had to choose from TAMU, Tennessee, and Auburn.

I'd choose TAMU.

1. Biggest checkbook

2. If I want something for the team, the University is going to give it to me.

3. Geographically in the best recruiting spot in the country. Less than 2 hours away from 3 of the largest recruiting areas in the country.

Those things would give me the best chance to succeed, and nothing makes someone happier than success.

You say that, but two of those schools have had HCs leave for better jobs within the past 7 or so years. Kiffin left for USC - which is a better job. Meyer left for Ohio State - which is a better job.

There might have been other situations at play, and it may not have been the best move, but they did it.

Like I said in a previous post, there is top tier and then there is "can win a title here" tier. I'd argue that some of those big 6 jobs are better than others.
