and I think they are better than any SEC schools band...
Drumline: yes. Band: no. They have one of the better drumlines in the country.

I want to see a Florida A and M style band in the SEC, one that actually plays songs that you don't need a history lesson to know about and actually written in the fans, student and young alumni's lifetimes.
and a band that can get down and boogie . . !!

Used the tune from Hey Look Me Over, out of a half-arse Broadway musical, Wildcat, staring an aging Lucille Ball.
True, and for that reason I don't like it. However, the show it came from has never been heard from since, and most LSU fans under 30, with no interest in things that happened before they turned 15, don't know the history and think it originated at LSU. And LSU did acquire the exclusive right to use the tune with different lyrics.

was a student at LSU in the 60s when they (whoever they are) introducted Hey Fighting Tigers.

Serioiusly.
Edit: My bad. I had always thought that Huey helped write that song with his musician friend Castro Carazo. Apparently it wasn't "Hey Fightn' Tigers", but "Touchdown for LSU" and "Darling of LSU".

About Long and LSU songs:
"He not only hand-picked the University’s president, James Monroe Smith, but also hired a new band director, Castro Carazo, the orchestra leader at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans.[1][6] Long initiated a massive increase in the band’s membership and saw to it that the band’s drab military dress was replaced with showier uniforms.[2][5] A number of songs were co-written for the band by Long and Carazo, including “Touchdown for LSU,” “Darling of LSU,” and “The LSU Cadets March.”[2][5] “Touchdown for LSU” is still played today as part of the band’s pregame performance. Long was often instrumental in lowering train ticket prices so that the band and students could travel to away football games.[1] Long would often lead the band through the streets during parades."
I like watching games around Texas fans when 'I've Been Working On The Railroad" is played!

In crowd involvement, absolutely. Golden Band plays songs the crowd loves and therefore get great participation. In quality? No.
Can you point to any measurable reason you have for saying this? Or are you just pulling it out of your nether regions?
GBFTL has won awards no other band in the country has won. The LSU band is the only band in the country to have won awards from each of the major networks. They won the ESPN Battle of the Bands just last year.
On top of of all that, it's the only band to give full scholarships. That's right, completely free tuition plus a monthly stipend.
The old adage about getting what you pay for?
True.

LSU's band was unanimously voted best in the SEC a few years ago in a poll of the conference's band directors.
Oh really? As in...12 years ago? I wasn't aware that 12 years was considered just "a few." I guess the best response the next time an LSU fan asks when Alabama won an SEC title will be to say, "a few years ago." Because, after all, that was even more recent than what you are referring to.
quote:
Even Bama's band director voted for TGBFTL.
Well, since it was a unanimous vote by SEC band directors, I gathered as much. I guess that vote is really relevant since the band director you are referring to retired over six years ago. And I guess nothing changes in the marching band world over a period of 12 years.

There have been many best college bands in America and the SEC as this info from Wikipedia shows. You can read more about the Sudler Trophy there.
The Sudler Trophy
The Sudler Trophy is an award bestowed on one university marching band each year. The award does not represent the winner of any championship, but rather a band surrounded by great tradition that has become respected nationally. No school may be honored with the award twice. The official description of the trophy is:
The purpose of the Sudler Trophy is to identify and recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence who have made outstanding contributions to the American way of life. The Sudler Trophy is awarded annually to a college or university marching band which has demonstrated the highest musical standards and innovative marching routines and ideas, and which has made important contributions to the advancement of the performance standards of college marching bands over a period of years.
The trophy measures exactly 22 1/2 inches from base to the tip of the drum major's mace.
