What purpose do they serve?
The basketball and baseball tournaments only reward the teams that have byes and play a team that already has to play possibly two teams before that

Correct but they never will and it no longer benefits anyone except on the off chance a bubble team makes a run in basketball and gets AQ bid otherwise winning it means little in seeding
