We're not talking teeball baw. Running full speed while looking up and over your shoulder but looking at the ground definitely makes sense. Yes an outfield "should always know where they are" but both adrenaline and fatigue can change that.

I know Tulane's baseball field is the same way and there's no change in feel from one to the other. Always thought that was weird and defeated the purpose.

It is also probably why Rebel baserunners can't figure out how far off the bag they are and are getting caught off base (damn turf!). Hard to look down at your feet and figure out how far off base they are, which infielder has the ball, and how much time they need before they are thrown out.

I think Tampa is the only major league park that has the change in color turf for a track. Even on turf fields I think the track is still dirt in other places.
