Dont know about that. He has put together some pretty good defenses in his time. He has been behind the 8 ball in terms of talent the past few years. Besides Berry of course.

Top 15 classes do not put you behind the 8 ball in talent.

This past year was his best in at least the last 7 years.
My stats don't go back any farther than that.

Look up how many yds Chavis' D gave up last year to FL and tell me we aren't upgrading in defensive coaching. It doesn't matter to me at this point if Chavis is amazing. We needed to get better and we have done that.

And after Ole Miss played Bama their "turning point" occurred!

(Ignore the fact that 4 of the next 5 teams they faced all finished below .500 and their awesome secondary went up against guys like Kodi Burns, someone out of ULM, a true freshman, and Tyson Lee.)

And the 364 passing yards given up in their Bowl Game is not a problem cuz Ttech averages 417.

I'm not arguing that chavis isn't an upgrade. He's a fine hire.
I'm just saying that some folks need to curb the enthusiasm.

I posted detailed stats about ut's d a week ago. The are decent but overrated - certainly not tops in the SEC.

Let LSU worry about Chavis'performance. You should be more concerned with Ole Miss living up to expectations, which I doubt they will, than LSU's defense under Chavis.

Basically you are arguing this. I dont see people on here acting like Chavis is the second coming we are excited about the potential of our defensive coaching staff as a whole.

Maybe expectations, but I wouldn't say the enthusiasm. I think we are greatly improved and can't wait to see the D this year.

yeah. 364 is not a problem at all when you win comfortably.

State and Auburn>Vandy and Kentucky.
I'm sorry we played so many shitty teams. That doesn't make these wins any less significant.
There was an actual, recognizable change in terms of play after the second half of the bama game. You can try to play it off on inferior opponents all you want to, but we beat Florida, Texas Tech, and LSU last year.

John Chavis led defenses' success tend to be inderectly proportional to the overall success of a team.
Team is good=Chavis defense bad
and vice versa

Seems proportional to the number of returning starters, really.

Nice.

They might have played the weakest collection of offenses in the entire country last year.

I am so ready for the Ole Miss fans to go back into hiding. Ole Miss has 1 decent year and all of a sudden they think they are the class of the SEC.

Once Nutt and Snead leaves this year they will be back to their also ran status and one can only hope their idiot fans go away.

They will find this year that winning is much easier when the coach can sell the whole underdog thing, but now that they are the Media darlings you won't be able to do that with that weak schedule they have.

I actually posted the number of returning starters, because the effects of returning starters on Chavis's D's is less than what is the norm for CFB.

But they appear to be indicative of how those defenses would perform. When you have 4 returning starters, yet still allow under 20 points per game. . .well that's just great coaching.

I couldn't have explained Ole Miss next year better than you just did.

Admit it Ole Miss is always going to be a flash in the pan now and then but soon enough they will be back to celebrating a Co-SEC West banner every 10 years. Arkansas will have more sucess over the next 4 years that Ole Miss will.

Same here. Except in the opposite direction. I rewatched the LSU/Bama game a couple days ago and it blew my mind how well our defense played that game only for our offense to play absolutely pitiful. And I can understand a little better why they packed it in after that.

After the Bama game, our defense, when you exclude Lee's pick six's, was giving up only 17 pts a game. And while you can debate how good Chavis really is, I'd don't think there is a doubt that he, along with Haley and Cooper are an upgrade from last year. September can't get here any faster.
