Looks like Auburn University is one hell of a bargain....

so if the question was -- If my kid didn't have a free ride.. -- AU is a very good decision.

none of that matters, are trying to justify not putting out the best effort possible for your child?

It all matters, is my kid independent or do I have to take care of everything for him/her? Especially if I am making the choice of colleges for them and they can not make the decision on their own.

So why would I make the decision of a college for him/her. Can he/she not think for themselves? Am I a controlling parent?

I'm not sure as to the importance of this variable.
It's very important in order to understand which school would provide the better all around fit for the child.
quote:

It's your child's future
But it is also 4 - 5 years of preparing for that future through academics yes, but also experiences. If my child was a gymnast wouldn't her gymanstic ambitions be be better served at Alabama than Vanderbilt?
quote:

The end result should be which university a degree from would be more beneficial to your child.
So then your suggesting that the only choice for any student/athlete/young person is Vanderbilt? That's a very arrogant and ignorant suggestion. An undergraduate degree from most of the schools in the SEC is a well respected accomplishment. And they vary in terms of which degree programs at which university would be more beneficial. All in all most degrees from SEC schools will serve a young graduate well. But the bottom line is that there are many factors that should play a role for parents to consider in assisting their children during the selection of a college.

However it is actually their decision. Wouldn't they want to go to a school is Tops in the nation in whatever major they choose to have?

If they only want to go to a particular school because of girls, friends, athletics, why would I try to steer them away from what ultimately will make them happy?

Also do I know what makes them happy? How close of a relationship do we have? Do we talk openly about things?

Georgia. Already tried Vandy and it didn't work out for me, but I still loved it.

At an undergraduate level, there is very little difference.

For graduate school, I'll concede that the school / program is important.

Any student that APPLIES himself can get a world class undergraduate education at any SEC university.

Also, if my child is able to get a scholarship to any SEC schools then that would mean he could get a scholarship to other schools. So why would I limit it to just SEC, why not Duke, Texas, USC, or another school if my kid is smart enough to get into Vandy.

What if they recognize arrogant, elitist, narrow-minded assholes and don't want to surrond themselves with people like you?

However, if whole idea of this thread is that I want best for my kid and he is able to get into any SEC school why would I limit myself.

Doesn't sound like I am offering very much guidance if I am limiting my child's options now does it?
