The internet killed Tennessee football. Seriously.
Tennessee once recruited nationally. They would go get some corn fed lineman from Nebraska's back yard and sell him on playing in front of 100,000. Then head down to Florida and pick up a receiver or two and sell him on beating Florida's arse every year.
The internet recruiting scene blew up in the early 2000s and Tennessee kept recruiting like they had in the 80s and 90s. Except it didn't work. Tennessee high school football has gotten better but it was really bad at this time outside of Memphis, which UT never recruited well anyway.
Quite simply, a lot of the talent that Tennessee signs is overrated. They get a bump because of the evaluators in the state, but its not out of the ordinary for a Tennessee 4-star to be a 2-star.
Then Tennessee has terrible coaching on top of that, and you get what you get. 20 years after the last title, there is no national relevance, and if you are being truthful, Tennessee is the worst program in the SEC in its current state.
Why would any decent recruit go to Tennessee in 2019? 100k fans doesn't impress anyone anymore. The Vol Navy is cool but kids these days don't care. The HS talent in the state is closer to seven SEC schools.
Tennessee will make adjustments at some point and be just like Mississippi State. A consistent bowl team with a flash in the pan run at a playoff one year out of 20. But UT fans that believe they are going back to being a year in year out national power are delusional.
