Because once players started getting paid, they no longer cared about being developed. They no longer had the incentive to be developed for the NFL.

There is a difference between a talented player and an elite player. An elite player is what happens when the talent is developed. Talented players flash signs of greatness but lack consistency. Elite players are consistently great.

Alabama is still the most talented team in the country according to recruiting ranks. However, they aren't the elite team they use to be.
