Auburn finished tied for 7th in the SEC and Northwestern finished tied for third in the Big 10.
I'll give you that, but I'd argue that Northwestern was the 5th best team in the Big 10 (behind OSU, Iowa, Penn State, and Wisconsin). I know they beat Wisky, but it was by 2 at home, and if they played 10 times, Wisky would win 6 or 7. And the Outback must have liked what they saw out of Auburn's play, or something, to take them over two SEC East teams that had better records. 5th out of 11 compared to 7th out of 12 isn't a huge difference (especially when I admit the SEC is better, it's just not a huge diff).

Penn State beat a Les Miles coached team that couldn't hold on to anything on a mud field.
A Les Miles coached team? The Les Miles coached team that finished 3rd in the SEC? It's not like they changed coaches in between the reg season and bowl. And PSU had to play on that field, too, seems like they did fine.

Iowa, Wisconsin, and Penn State are nothing special.
Then Bama has one "special" game next year, Florida (two if you want to count the SECCG, also). And that's if UF is close to as good as they were this year, which is a complete guess.
