I think being "pretend good" is the worst fate in sports

When you're elite it's obviously the best.
When you're bad you know it and try to fix it.
Pretend good is the worst. You think you are close but you aren't.
What is pretend good? Think Penn State under James Franklin. Think what Tennessee has been the last few years under Heupel.
And now it's clear Alabama has slide into the ranks of the pretend good programs.
Decent W-L record in the regular season, good enough to skate into the playoffs, absolutely no threat at all to actually win it. No sense of urgency for fixing anything because "hey we're doing pretty good" but it's all a mirage.
It's like being a #7 or #8 seed in the NBA playoffs. You're just kinda there to fill out the bracket for the actual contenders.
