quote:Good question. I seem to remember lsumatt having a thread about it, and it seemed that the BCS computers likely would have split between Oregon and BSU for the #2 rating. BSU's SOS was higher than most would expect, and UO's was lower than most would expect. Would I have considered them title-worthy? Sure. Would I have protested if Oregon had qualified instead? No.
Just curious, but if Boise hadn't choked against Nevada last year and won in Overtime, would you have considered them title worthy?
ETA: No. That's wrong. BSU's schedule was noticeably weaker than Oregon's and TCU's. I was mixing TCU and BSU up. No, BSU would not have been title-worthy last year. If they had gone undefeated, they would have had the #4 SOS among the four hypothetical undefeated teams.

Don't know why. Stanford, USC, and Arizona (not really) were the only good teams they played in the regular season.
Still, Boise's schedule was in no way comparable to that. They played their two BCS teams, but then during the season played like four teams that were in the bottom 15 of FBS football, two of them being the absolute worst two teams.

quote:Depends on whom you ask. I keep my system I've told the board about 3252381750234987562 times, and if you use the old BCS SOS system, where you take your opponents record times two, plus your opponents' opponents' record, and divide by 3, Boise State's SOS was higher than UO's on selection Sunday (Oregon ranked higher for me because of the quality win points from the Stanford game).
Still, Boise's schedule was in no way comparable to that.
(As of selection Sunday)
School - Record - Opponents w/l% - Opponents' opponents w/l%
Oregon - 11-0 - .429 - .531
Boise State - 11-1 - .475 - .483
(FCS wins don't count in my system)
Boise State's opponents had a higher winning percentage. Part of this is that the WAC actually did better OOC than most think and that Oregon's OOC opponents were 1-11 New Mexico, FCS Portland State, and 6-6 Tennessee.
Oregon skimmed by BSU and TCU by a slimmer margin than most realize.

Please tell me BSU that you think this is an advantage....are you kidding me?!?!!
I was pointing it out more to illustrate that the loss of top WR can be mitigated to a degree through team play.
Would I prefer superstars? Sure, but Boise has proven it can win with that "spread-the-love" model at wide out.

Ah hey guys - have you forgot I'm the one you are all arguing with??
Sheesh, I leave for a couple hours and I'm 4 pages back!
I've heard it said that BSU is new ND when it comes to it being a polarizing topic. You either love them or despise them.
Which is why their TV ratings are always high.

Unless you have NBC televising every game that ESPN doesn't get then you're not ND. Sorry.

But I'll say a 3 loss Oregon team is a better team than Boise.
You know what my favorite is? When people quote how stellar someone's SOS ranking is and then ignore they dropped several games.
"They play a tough schedule"
"Ah yeah. . . . and lose! Pretty sure Boise could do that too."
But come on WilsonHater, you know this isn't about objectivity here. You feel threatened by the little guy and want him to be put back in his place.
It's the age old story of local guy being threatened because the new kid is taking his girlfriend.
It's just too dam bad that you know Daniel is going to eventually win the tourney and walk out with Ali.
By the way, I think I might still have a little crush on Ali.

Really?
Because my next connection was to let everyone know that Boise also gets ND's endowment, academics and alumni base.

That would be an insult to BSU.

Correct me if I am wrong, but BSU lost their OC and DC along with their 2 best WR? Along with the loss of 3 practices and 8 or 9 starters. So with all this you feel you are going to come out and beat a team that has more size, speed, and talent!!! BTW. We beat the ACC champs (08) as well, but it is nothing we brag about!
See you in the Dome!

Marlon Brown is going to shite on Petersen's chest...both literally and figuratively.
He's finally going to breakout and show why he was a 5* WR coming out of high school.

Broncos don't believe in star ratings brah.

Broncos don't believe in star ratings brah.
That's why I don't pay too much attention to star ratings when it comes to Boise. If and when this era of BSU's elite status ends, it will come out of nowhere.
And they're going to spank Georgia.

yeah, okay, and next you're going to tell me that they don't believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny.

Star ratings aren't everything, but in general, they're pretty accurate.

So you do agree that Boise State wins those games because they're better, right?
no. They were merely better at that specific time. If you truly think this that means that every time an upset is. (such as a 1-14 team beating a playoff team) they're the better team. It should be quite obvious why this isn't true.

Actually that's the funny thing. I'm being perfectly objective. Boise need to play a tougher schedule or I won't take them seriously and neither should anyone else. If you and Boise don't like it then switch conferences. (something TCU have done) Not to mention they play tougher OOC games than Boise anyway.
