The court said differently. Both Butts and Bryant sued The Saturday Evening Post, won their respective lawsuits, and put the magazine out of business.
Butts had stepped down as football coach in 1960, and was forced out as the AD in 1963 due to the fallout over this scandal and because of his alleged womanizing. Bryant, of course, suffered no such fallout.
It was before my time, but from what I have read on the subject of Butts, it was time for him to retire, anyway. During the decade of the 50s, despite having some pretty good talent, UGA only managed a winning record in 4 of 10 seasons, and the best of those years was the 10-1 SEC Champ team of 1959. Other than that, a lot of mediocre seasons.

Not really. It was stopped after the Saturday Evening Post controversy. Both sides agreed to it.
saturdayeveningpost.com

On March 23, 1963 the Post ran an exposé on college football, The Story of a College Football Fix, charging that James Wallace “Wally” Butts Jr.—the University of Georgia’s athletic director and former football coach—had given away game secrets to Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant that affected the outcome of a 1962 Georgia-Alabama game.

everything I said was true; that incident was an underlying factor in the annual series getting shite canned
and I really do not care whether you think "I can be trusted at my word"
do you have any idea how ridiculous you look with that comment?

see, I never made any claim about the veracity of the claim (that Butts gave inside info to Bear) - I don't know and really don't care if that was true or not
I said that the incident was why that annual game was ultimately taken off the schedule
the fact that it took a few years after the incident is irrelevant - redoing a schedule is impractical for the next year on short notice, that was true then and it is true now
had that never happened, the game would have likely continued
I am really surprised at the number of emotional responses to that post of mine
one with "my word can't be trusted" because I offered info/an opinion from an incident in the early 60's
one that said it was the "Saturday Evening Post incident" (which, as my link proves, was about the alleged incident I described)

**SIDE NOTE - "the court said differently" is a garbage argument, unless you think that court verdicts are infallible and that innocent people never get convicted or guilty people never get off...

Nothing you stated has any basis in truth. Butts didn't give Bryant any inside information on Georgia's plays.
You are a liar and I just wanted the posters viewing this thread not to trust you or place any value in anything you have to say.
All anyone that cares about it has to do is read the article linked and they can get the real information, not your ridiculous twist.
I could say that dcbl rapes dogs on Mondays and Wednesdays but, that doesn't necessarily make it true. Is it true?

The poster was saying that you are a moron and things that you believe in your head aren't necessarily real.
Is that what you meant? Butts didn't retire as head coach of the Bulldogs due to anything having to do with the call, as you falsely claim.

Butts didn't retire as head coach of the Bulldogs due to anything having to do with the call, as you falsely claim
And what "call" are you talking about?
A phone call? A bad call in the field?
Butts was forced out at UGA
most UGA folks believe that he was bitter about it and shared our playbook and insight on key players' tendencies with Bama.
That is a fact, whether he did or not? Noone really knows
Calling me a liar or a moron for sharing this story makes you a blithering idiot
Claiming that hard feelings on the UGA side had nothing to do with that annual series ending makes you an even bigger idiot
Lastly, this all happened before even I was born, this is not something I really care all that much about, all I did was relay the story, from the UGA point of view
The fact that this upsets you so much is very telling about who you are as a person and where your priorities lie...

Just looked, new member, less than 300 posts
Obvious reading comprehension issues
Cares WAY too much about what may or may not have happened more than 50 years ago
Since I'm a nice guy I'll explain a fact of life to you, there is a big difference between being a liar and having low integrity and having a difference of opinion about an event
You are acting a lot like a Hillary voter...

Dumb frick stated this:

I stated that this wasn't true.
Dumb frick, you, now claims that you never said this at all.
Dumb frick, you, links an article from the Sat. Evening Post that was discredited as proof that he is right.
I link an article that obliterates the Saturday Evening Post article. Dumb frick claims all Georgia fans believe that one of your most beloved and successful coaches was a traitor and low down bastard.
Dumb frick says that it happened over 50 years ago so it doesn't really matter anyway, even though Dumb frick is the one that initiated the conversation about it.
Dumb frick melts and replies, in length, three times to the same post. Dumb frick is dumb.

NO, I said that I relayed an old story from the UGA point of view
Whether the claim was true or not I don't and can't know, just like you don't and can't know if it was true or not either
To be fair, I could of and maybe should have said an "alleged" incident
But I did not and am not claiming to know if the accusations were true
Georgia folks say yes, Bama folks say no
calling me a liar over this is really cute
This was not ever meant to be a troll on Bama, just talking old SEC Football stories

Dumb frick, you, links an article from the Sat. Evening Post that was discredited as proof that he is right
The fact that the schools sued the paper proves that they were covering their arse and trying to preserve their reputation
The fact that the post lost the case only proves that they could not prove the story, not that this issue was not a hot button issue
That whole alleged incident is why the UGA vs Bama series was cancelled, just like I said

What was the score of the UGA vs Bama game in 1966? They must have played, since the series was not canceled...
You said I said something about a "call"
That means you are a liar, is that how this works?
You went right to questioning my integrity instead of arguing the Bama side of the story
I'm done with you, you have demonstrated that you aren't very bright and that you have low character

Rat, you labeled your thread UGA & UT and the few number of games between them. I will expound on that for you since I am an older Gator but also loved SEC football. back in the 1960s the SEC was very forgiving of schedules and teams did their own schedules and it was the wild west.
You are correct, sir. Glad to see there are some posters around here who know what it was like back then and how some things operated. Very different from today. Thanks real_gator8.
