Even as a UT grad I have to come to A&M's defense on this. The research conducted at A&M in the agriculture field is only behind UC Davis and Cornell.
frick, A&M cloned a cat. Something that all other agriculture universities in the SEC could only wish to do

Truth is we're Texans first
Not to bullshite but I would buy anyone a beer even if they are an A&M grad or even an OU grad if they offer good conversation. Nothing wrong with SIPPING some beer with good people
Actually I hung out with two guys who are huge Arkansas fans vacationing here in Port Aransas last week

I do not know why not. Maybe GA Tech has something to do with it.

I've already told you why: AAU membership is all about research dollars and the University System of Georgia is set up in such a way that UGA isn't exactly going to benefit well enough to garner membership.

What do I mean? Well:

1.) Georgia Tech (AAU Member school and University System of Georgia member) is the preeminent Engineering program in the Southeast and one of the best in the country. There's a TON of research dollars to be found in that sector of the STEM field and tech all but has the market cornered in the state (if not in this region of the country) by design. While UGA has recently opened an Engineering College on campus, it was done so knowing full well that it is not and never will be a peer of Tech in that area but can bring in some research dollars that were recently unavailable.

2.) Augusta University (formerly Augusta State and Georgia Regents University and University System of Georgia member) is the established public medical school in the state. While UGA attempted to open its own medical school (thereby opening up access to the honors and research money that come with it), it was all but smothered in its crib by the Board of Regent members that represent Augusta as their campus, city, network, and alumni base cannot compete in any way with what UGA would have to offer and would basically be signing off on dooming their own University. So, what UGA has been left with is the possibility for one of hte country's best medical prep schools (which as you can figure doesn't exactly do much in the way of bringing in research dollars). It also doesn't help that Emory University (another AAU member) located in Atlanta is one of the best medical schools in the country.

All told, UGA is a very solid research university that offers a lot of good, borderline great programs. However, it is hampered by state politics and the University system from being able to establish and, thereby, access the necessary research funding in the STEM areas that are necessary for an AAU invitation (not a whole lot of research dollars for the humanities and Business, Journalism, and Law don't command a whole lot either). That being said, we still do pretty well in the STEM areas. For example, our complex carbohydrate center has been at the forefront of cancer research for some time and we still have the primary Ag and Vet schools in the state. But where the money counts, we're hamstrung.

If I recall, Georgia Tech just got accepted to AAU in 2010.

Which was 6 years ago and in large part a result of their hold on education and innovation of the Engineering field. What's your point?

The AAU is wonky anyhow about how they do things. Nebraska was voted out a few years ago just because their medical center isn't on campus or something.

But according to Adams, the University already exceeds most of the AAU’s membership criteria. “Interestingly enough, we rank above the mean in the AAU in every category but one, and that has to do with federal research dollars,” he said. “That’s because we have historically not had a developed medical and engineering program, where about 80 percent of federal dollars go to those two areas.”

The University meets many of the AAU’s membership requirements. It has professors who are members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. The University also has past and present faculty who have received memberships and awards listed by the AAU, such as the American Academy in Rome, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Education.

As for doctorate degrees, the University gave 417 degrees in 2010, while the University of Florida gave 771 degrees, Georgia Tech gave 416 and the University of Missouri at Columbia gave 322, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Once the University develops its new medical and engineering programs, Adams said an invitation to the AAU may come its way. In many cases, the AAU has only looked at federal research dollars, he said.

So pretty much everything I said, right?

Tech and Emory may not like to share the spotlight but they don't have the power on their own to keep us out. Florida I guess could also oppose us but, again, three schools out of the group isn't enough to keep us out.

What hurts is the lack of a med school. For a while it looked like we were going to have both Med and Engineering to add to our list but Augusta killed that. I think UGA still has enough to warrant inclusion but as that link indicated, admission into the group comes off as a rather arbitrary process.
