A good point. They review everything else safety-related. Why not this?

Simple. Player has to sit out the rest of the drive. Players want to play. This won't completely eliminate the fake injuries but it will cut them down significantly.
This is the solution to fake injuries. It would be a pretty subtle change that would virtually never impact players who are really hurt but would provide enough of a disincentive to make faking injuries much less attractive than it is now. If a team wants their best players on the field at a critical moment, they can't stop momentum with a fake injury. If stopping momentum is really that important and they don't want to use a timeout, then at least they have to give something up.

The great thing about this rule is that it wouldn't require officials to make a call about whether a player is really hurt. It doesn't matter--if play has to be stopped because of an apparent injury, the same thing happens every time. That player sits the rest of the drive.

I guess this could cause problems, though, in the event that a player gets a cut or something that's clearly a real injury but is minor enough that they can come back as soon as it gets bandaged. That would be the drawback... could cause problems.

The moment the ref understands the QB is initiating his slide he is "giving himself up" period. The play is dead. That part is in the books now. Looks like the refs screwed it up. Which is nothing compared to some of these stupid interpretations of targeting. Now there is where they should spend their time.

It was very clear what Pitt QB did.

If you’re going to tie up the defender due to all the rules protecting offensive players you need to prohibit the fake slide.

I keep hearing there was no one around him. A defender in attack mode can close that gap fast. They held up when he showed slide. Good rule

It's a good rule but I think they should tack on a Delay of Game penalty

Yes or unsportsmanlike conduct. I also think there should be a yardage penalty on intentional grounding instead of just placing the ball where the quarterback threw it. If a quarterback is getting sacked he has nothing to lose now by intentional grounding. Should be moved back at least 5 yards, maybe 10.

One thing I think could be added to make this rule better is to specify that the call can be reviewed but only overturned if it's clear that the defenders did not quit on the play. The reason for doing this would be to help rule out cases where officials blow the whistle when they misinterpret a QB's move. Maybe the QB makes a cut that looks like starting a slide to that official. But if the defenders on the field play through and don't show any sign that they interpreted it as a slide, then I think it would be fair to say that the QB's movement did not constitute the start of a slide.

Idk maybe this is just making it too complicated

Congrats to Kenny Pickett. He single handedly made the NCAA add a rule because of that one play.
