What's funny is that Tenn only has 1 good win in the 2 seasons so far. They beat Kentucky in Lexington last year. That is it
This year they barely beat a crappy Pitt team that lost their starting QB in the 3rd qtr. They barely beat a very mediocre, at best, Florida team in Gainesville. The win at LSU might have been the most impressive just because of the score, but they have really only beaten one above avg team in 1.5 seasons so far

We are a pass defense away from competing with anybody in the nation.

not necessarily. Things are still very fresh and new; we've seen COUNTLESS examples of year 2 of a coaching regime do big things, but typically things will even out and revert to the mean in time.
We have zero idea how UT will look when hooker isn't there. We have zero idea how everyone other than bama/uga will handle UT once they are familiar with UT's offense and has seen it multiple times in a row. We also have no idea that UT will ever be good on defense since most defensive players are probably not thrilled abotu being on the field the majority of the game since the offense scores within a couple minutes.
I'm not downplaying what UT has done up to this very moment, beucase tehy've surpassed pretty mcuh even the biggest naysayer's projections. I'm just saying I'm not ready to declare them "back" or a staple in the top 10 year. Early on in kirby and saban's tenures, those guys weren't runnign any type of crazy system; they won and won big and were in natty contention because they out-talented people, they palyed crazy defense, they ran the ball, and they were tough. That's practicallyt he opposte of UT right now. They spread it out, they throw the ball, their defense stinks. So it's very much TBD on where they go from here.

Heupel has done a good job and has Tennessee pointed in the right direction, but forgive me if I don't see Heupel as some savant. When much of your strategy relies on trying to snap the ball before the defense is set, then that screams gimmicky to me.
The other day I saw some qb for a pro team pretend they were handing the ball off only to end up actually keeping it and passing instead. That was some bullshite because the defenders all ran toward the line of scrimmage to defend the run and he didn’t even have the ball! Pussy’s!

Heupel has done a very good job of adopting the Briles offense.
This offense is a version of Spurrier's
Fun & Gun of the 90's

Wow with stats like that you'd think they'd played teams that are 16-14 overall and none currently ranked.
Oh look at that ... it's exactly what happened!

The tempo, spacing, and general philosophy of the offense Heupel directly copied from watching Briles at Baylor.
