Just goes to show you how ludicrous the number of national championships some teams claim really is.

What a dumb list. Some of those weren't even national title games.

Well your reply may have only been correct for the ap poll, but it did lead the to the responses and eventual of clearing things up about how things were done in the past. So now I know. I remember in 1992 though it was not the bcs, they implemented a system where number 1 and 2 would play for the championship, bypassing bowl tie ins if possible. Then the bcs came a little later, and now the playoffs. It has been a long road to here.

The game still decided the NC in AP and it was far more
than a "reward for players"

Bear and Ara both wanted to win the game desperately and it was the highest rated and biggest CFB game played up to that point in CFB history.

So yeah,it belongs on the list

Agreed 100%. And if you actually go back and watch the game, you will see it is more than deserving of its ranking. That was a helluva game that was evenly matched. A missed extra point prevented Alabama from winning the AP title with a tie in the football game.

The Coalition (92-94) actually still had the bowl tie-ins. They lucked out though since the Big East (Miami in 92) and the ACC (Florida State in 93) weren't obligated to play in a specific bowl.

I would imagine the writer of this piece is too young to remember this game and how things were back then,

He was 13 at the time. Hell, I was 10 and remember it well.
