Take a look at #3 on this list. Alabama lost this game, but ESPN ranks it as the 3rd greatest game that decided a college football championship? How did this game decide a championship if one team claims it before the game was played?

Ara Parseghian got the better of Bear Bryant in a storied Notre Dame-Alabama matchup. AP Photo
Two traditional powers meeting for the first time with undefeated records and a national title at stake. Two legendary coaches engaging in a 60-minute chess match. After six lead changes, Alabama pinned Notre Dame at the Irish 2-yard-line on third-and-8. With Tide coach Bear Bryant figuring on a punt and hoping for a safety, Irish coach Ara Parseghian had quarterback Tom Clements throw deep to backup tight end Robin Weber, who had one catch all season. The 36-yard gain let Notre Dame run out the clock. Checkmate. The Irish, who spent 44 seasons refusing to play in bowls, climbed to No. 1 because they played in one.

Yeah, that is dumb because the champion was decided before the bowl games in those days, the bowl games were treated as rewards to the players and practices were light and curfews were late. I would imagine the writer of this piece is too young to remember this game and how things were back then, just read some pieces on this game and put this together this article.

Pains me to say it but I'd put the last second TD by Clemson to beat Bama as 3.

1 and 2 are correct IMO.

That said I wasn't even a thought in 1973 so I can't comment.

But my top 3 are
UT-USC
Bama-UGA
Bama-Clemson part 2

It was Ivan Maisel. So technically he's a Bam and should know better.

UPI and I believe a couple of others awarded the title prior to the bowl which is where the title claim came from.

Alabama in 7 out of 20 of those games, with 4 of the top 5. Notre Dame is next with 5 out of the 20.

Bama won 5 of those bowl games with 4 giving Bama a National Championship. The only one that Bama didn't win the natty, was when #5 ND jumped #3 Bama even though Bama won their bowl.

Alabama is America's team. This list proves that America likes to watch Bama football.

NO IT WAS NOT.

You are half wrong. The AP changed picking their champs after the bowls in 1965 after Bama won the AP poll in 1964 before the bowls. It helped Bama win the 65 AP championship because #1 Mich St & #2 Arkansas lost their bowls & #4 Bama beat #3 Neb.

BUT...... The Coaches poll still decided their champion before the bowls until 1973...

Although the coaches' football poll has generally been in accord with the AP Poll there have been years where the polls disagree. Eleven times – in 1954, 1957, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1990, 1991, 1997, and 2003 – the Coaches Poll has crowned a different national champion than the AP Poll,

It would be better to just do a list and put it in chronological order.

No. The AP changed in 1965, sort of. Notre Dame refused to play in what they considered a "degrading exhibition game", so the AP switched back to awarding prior to the bowl games in 1966, in order to award that trophy to Notre Dame.

They finally decided that Notre Dame could frick themselves and switched back three years later. Notre Dame caved to pressure and began accepting bowl bids with the 1970 Cotton Bowl. The UPI followed suit by recognizing bowl games in 1974.

The game still decided the NC in AP and it was far more
than a "reward for players"

Bear and Ara both wanted to win the game desperately and it was the highest rated and biggest CFB game played up to that point in CFB history.

So yeah,it belongs on the list

My favorite excerpt from that list:
quote:

This game must have been for the national championship, because Notre Dame lost a week later to unranked Great Lakes Naval Training Station and still finished No. 1 in the final poll.

Just goes to show you how ludicrous the number of national championships some teams claim really is.
