BTW, the National Championship drew 17.2 million viewers. The Super Bowl drew 105.97 million viewers. You tell me who is better known nationally.
That's the Nielsen rating. 28 million viewers tuned in to watch the national championship game. Admittedly, a much lower number than the Super Bowl. But one thing I have noticed about the NFL that is different from college. While college broadcast emphasize the coaches more than the players, NFL broadcasts seem to do the exact opposite.
You ask the man on the street who Sean Payton is, they will have no clue most of the time. Ask them who Peyton Manning, Reggie Bush, or Drew Brees is, they will be talking you up for hours.

So you honestly think more people know who Nick Saban is than Sean Payton? Seriously?

Did I say that? I think they are about equal in popularity to be honest. They will both dominate ESPN when football season starts up and get equal time on the major networks who cover football.
The average Joe on the street have probably never heard of either of them.

quote:I think it is much closer than you percieve it to be. Payton gained a ton of notoriety by winning the SB, but Saban has been on the scene much longer. His scowling face has been on the cover of multiple Sports Illustrated's, as well as numerous other magazines including Forbes. He is also one of the most recognized figures in college football. His celebrity has been far greater to Sean Payton prior to the SB, and the focus on the Saints win was more on the players and the city than it was on Sean Payton. Also, I was in Seaside, FL last summer sitting at a packed wine bar right next to Sean Payton and no one in the place knew who he was. Saban would have stood out like a turd in a punch bowl.

I guess you missed my post up top? I still don't believe many people know who Payton or Saban are. Most people identify more with players than they do coaches. That's why I think public knowledge of them are about equal.

Not shocking from you either NOLA. Y'all really do think EVERYONE in the world gives a shite about Bama. Let me throw another name out there: Bill Belichick. He's been on the scene longer and has 3 Super Bowl rings. Who do you think is better known nationally?

quote:Hands down Bellicheck. Comparing him to Payton is ridiculous. All I am saying is that clearly very few people nationally knew who Sean Payton was prior to the SB victory. Whereas anyone who has followed college football at all over the past decade or so is likely to not only know who Saban is but probably has an opinion about him.

Incidently this has nothing to do with Alabama, but rather Nick Saban's personel notoriety. I am sure you are aware that Saban succeded at a few mid-tier jobs before he created your personal nightmare in Tuscaloosa.

FYI - Nick Saban has 87,472 more fans on Facebook than Sean Payton.

Saban is rumored to have banged the governor's wife. Payton has nothing on that....

O.K. I can go with that. Payton was a bad comparison. But you agree with me that someone who dominated the NFL is more highly regarded than someone that dominates college football? That's all I was saying. Belichick is treated more like a rock star everywhere he goes. Once Nick gets out of SEC land he's just another college coach.
