Thanks for all of your replies/input. Pretty clear the vast majority do not consider Mark Richt a great coach.

Btw I agree with many of the replies in this thread.

Mark Richt is a great coach depending upon your definition of great. He is definitely an upper echelon coach in the SEC but he is not(yet)an elite coach.
It's not so much the lack of winning championships in the ultra competitive SEC although that plays a role but that losing season last year. The knock on Mark Richt is that he some how manages to under achieve with the talent on hand.
If the Georgia fan base gets restless and wants to change coaches, be very careful what you ask for as you might get it. Georgia could very easily do a lot worse than Mark Richt.

I 100% agree with this. He is not elite because that is reserved for, well..the elite. He is very good and I believe he is great, but not elite.

damn right. Florida and Tennessee are understanding that lesson the hard way right now.

Too many people fail to understand that coaching stability is one of the keys to success. That and chemistry among the coaching staff.
Coaches unfortunately are graded alot like relief pitchers in baseball. It is all about the last couple of outings.
Some teams over perform. Is that coaching? Some teams under perform. Is that coaching?
The mark of a good coach is how well their teams handle and deal with adversity over the course of the season. Everyone can't win. It should be how well they compete. Of course, winning cures a lot of ills.

quote:About the best I can say about him from afar... good coach, plus he seems like a really decent person. But his teams are either over-hyped or else they under-achieve. Even so, IMO...
good coach

I think he is a very good coach but I'd have to reserve the "great" moniker for those with more championship credentials. He seems like a decent guy to me and he sure as heck ain't as bad as some made him out at the start of the year. SEC is a tough division and probably the only place losing a couple of games put's your head on the block.

No. Nice guy but no.
Georgia should be an elite program in the SEC but instead they have to rely on Floria and Auburn to have down years to even think about winning the East. I really don't understand why they're not better. Coach has the whole state to himself for recruiting, pulls some nice recruiting classes, and then...nothing. He doesn't seem to have his team's respect - the players do what they want when they want. Year in and year out the dawgs come up just short. Every program has down years but its been a long time for UGA. 1980 was a long, long time ago. With the love the SEC gets nationally they should be in the mix every year..
Like I said, CMR is a great human being, he's too nice to be a coach in the cut-throat world of the SEC.

BAMA makes average coaches good, good coaches great, and great coaches legends. UGA doesn't.

Unfortunately I have to agree with this and I think lack of discipline is a defining flaw in Mark's coaching philosophy.
