Do they not bring out the chains for measurements anymore?

Maybe I’m off base here but I can’t remember bringing out the chains for a measurement being done in any of the games I’ve watched this year, or at least seems that it’s been done far less than normal.
Has there been a rule change, or a change in policy, that discourages against this? I know there have been some blatantly bad spot calls that they immediately signaled first down. Off the top of my head there were two that favored Ole Miss, one against LSU and one against Alabama. And then there was one that favored LSU against Arkansas. In the case of the LSU-Arkansas one they actually “reviewed” it but who the hell knows what their justification was, and the chains were not brought out for a measurement.

Always wondered why they don’t just use a laser level across the field.

Don’t they spot the ball at the next closest yard mark so there’s no need for a measurement?
(You either make the line to gain or not, pending review, no need to measure)

Same, can't recall a measurement this season.

Well, that would be accurate... which can't happen. Even with video evidence, they still can't get the call right.
Should be able to automate most of the jobs that seem to much for refs anyway. At least remove the handcuffs where the refs can't correct it b/c they "didn't see that" facemask, hold, or spot.
Was a funny moment in the Bama/ TN game with a ref trying to eyeball a spot from sideline. He took a giant step right, which gave Bama a 1st. In the attempt to correct it, he went back put the ball down, eyeballed it again and split the difference.
They probably/ maybe got the final spot correct, but it looked like amateur hour and with all the 3 card monte, I have no trust the spot was right or not.
The NFL & P5 schools should implement some tracking tech in every football measuring motion & location. We would never again have to wonder whether another camera might have a view of the ball in a pile around the goal line.

What are we measuring? How far it is from Atlanta to Oxford? No one knows.
