I’ve always had a nuanced opinion of Dan Mullen. At least I think it is nuanced.
He’s not a bad head coach. You will win a lot of ball games with Mullen on your sideline.
He’s not a bad CEO of a program. He will develop a team on a year to year basis predicated on the talent at his disposal.
I do not think he is a great head coach on game day though. He is tactically aggressive but strategically arch-conservative. I’ve seen this man essentially bleed his own clock while down two scores late multiple times. He’s done it at State and Florida. He does not seem to understand the difference in tactics required based of the scoreboard circumstances.
I do not think he recruits well enough for a coach with his resume of consistent success. He ought to be landing a laundry list of 5-star quarterbacks in Gainesville having coached Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, and Dak Prescott. Classes consistently in the in the 9-15 range means you’re losing ground in the arms race to to the alphas in this conference.
Dan Mullen is essentially the pinnacle of head coaching achievement for a man who is really more of a fit as a career coordinator. He’s in his 4th year at Gainesville and he’s still having to duck tape and super glue an offense together. Dude, you ought to have all the perfect players to run exactly what you want to accomplish on offense by now…this ain’t Stakville.

Fake or not, he exploited it.
No, he didn't. He was very low key about it.

But, yes, my gut tells me it was fake.
Crap. He has lived his life with no scandal and everybody (including other coaches) say he is a genuine person. But yes, by all means follow your "gut". It's probably never been wrong.
