What you need to do is go back to that Florida board and tell those white trash Fred-Durst-Hat-Wearing Jort-Sporting douchebags to shut their cock suckers because that call by the refs had Jack P Nimble Sh-it to do with the fact they couldn't score a touchdown in that game.

Holding can happen before or while the ball is in the air. I'm pretty sure you can make contact up to 5 yards past the LOS but you cannot hold anywhere.

That is the professional rule. No 5 yard limit in college. Cannot contact receiver while the ball is in the air.
May be different rule when Back is behind the line of scrimmage.

Sure if you don't get caught. If you get caught it's defensive holding if the ball is not in the air. If the ball is in the air it's defensive pass interference.

Same thing happened in the BCS title game between Bama(21) and LSU(0), no penalty was called. BIG12 refs, I think.

I would think the definition of Pass interference would reference a forward pass. If that is the case being behind the LOS would be irrelevant.
Yea I don't think this is right. Any pass that is not a lateral is a forward pass. Doesn't matter if it is completed behind or passed the line of scrimmage.

As to whether it is PI, it does matter. The forward pass has to cross the neutral zone for PI rules to take effect.
quote:
A defender who makes contact with an intended receiver behind the line of scrimmage cannot be called for pass interference at any level of American football, although he may still be guilty of a different foul. So if the receiver on the screen isn't across the LOS, PI rules still don't apply. The pass has to cross the LOS for PI. But, defensive holding rules say that you can't use hands or arms to tackle, hold, or otherwise illegally obstruct anyone but the ball carrier. So it's a question of whether or not its defensive holding, until the pass crosses the LOS.

Defense can hit the RB but they cannot tackle or grab the RB. Will be called defensive holding.

Thank you. The OP's question seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Section 3, Article 8.c:
Defensive pass interference is contact beyond the neutral zone by a Team B player whose intent to impede an eligible opponent is obvious and it could prevent the opponent the opportunity of receiving a catchable forward pass.
Section 3, Article 4. a. Defensive players may use hands and arms to push, pull, ward off or lift offensive players when attempting to reach the runner.
b. Defensive players may not use hands and arms to tackle, hold or otherwise illegally obstruct an opponent other than a runner.
(No mention of neutral zone in holding rule...it is illegal to hold a receiver anywhere on the field.)
holding vs. PI.

This guy has it right.
I was furious when I saw the flag.
And if I'm not mistaken it was called Holding. Not PI.
After the call was called holding I saw where that could be called but that is never called in that situation. That's why some people were calling it BS. I still feel that way myself. But whatever game over no good crying over spilled milk.

Actually...the dawg fan was correct...the penalty did not cause us to lose the game. The refs threw so many flags that they are probably undergoing Tommy Johns surgery to repair their elbows/arms. 24 or 25 flags were ACCEPTED...there was one or two maybe declined. UGA GOT MORE FLAGS than we did. However...not to make excuses...our flags resulted in four first downs for UGAs offense and UGAs fouls resulted in 0 first downs for our offense....which sorely needed the help.
We could not run the ball a lick for most of the game, we did manage to start moving UGAs DL more in the late third/fourth qts...but time ran out after we put ball on the ground too many times.
UGA came out fired up with backs to the wall and stopped us. As far as the penalty question...it is rare to see defensive holding called on plays behind the line...it is almost never called. You will see offensive holding but not defensive. A weird game where both teams had 15 yarders thrown at them for mere talking to opposing player a little after a play ended. Wrs and DBs are going talk.
